YA - Mother abandons kid(s) who work and get anough money to pay rent, only to find out Rent was paid in full for that month.

I read this book in High School, I think, so somewhere between 2008 and 2012. I can't remember much more than that, aside from a line the main character said after receiving the letter that may have said something like "Why would she pay the rent is she was leaving us?" I wish I could remember more, but I really can't. ANY help would be appreciated, thanks!

Dakota, can you tell us more about the mother - her job/skills/interests, married/single/etc., where's the father, how many kids and their ages, etc.?

What's the time period and location (country, region, big city/small town)?

I would if I could remember literally any of that. All I can remember is what I listed above.... I want to say that at least one of the kids (there were one or two, both boys) was in High School? I feel like it was about drugs or something but I really can't remember much more. I don't remember anything about the father.
