Roseanne This was a good one. I read it a long time ago. I had a copy that had this and Dracula in one book.

Colleen | 47 comments I've heard this was good - I'll need to get to it at some point - maybe Halloween/October. I love to read the "themes" of the year.

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) Loved this novel! It is about so much more than a scientist creating a monster.

Agreed. The philosophical elements of it would make for a great discussion.

Nyla (nylap) | 38 comments I read The New Annotated Edition, which was just published in August 2017. It highlighted the changes made in the different versions published within Mary Shelley's lifetime, and how those different versions corresponded to changes in her beliefs throughout her life. Very informative.

Kirsten (kmcripn) There are two great stories in Frankenstein: the novel and the story behind the novel.

Thanks, I might do that!

Heather (bruyere) I've read it a few times. I recently read Dracula and only enjoyed part of it. Funny how the "inspiration" feels hokey down the line. I felt similarly about Treasure Island.

I'm the same way with Dracula. I think it's just because, while that narrative strategy might have been innovative at the time, we've come so far and seen so many different types of strategies employed, that we're a bit jaded. Sort of like seeing the film "The Others", which had the misfortune to come out 6 months after "The 6th Sense", so we were all expecting the ending.

Heather (bruyere) I'm not opposed to the style in Dracula in general. I thought it worked nicely in The Phantom of the Opera and The Prestige. I thought the first part of Dracula was great - when you feel that dread of...something is off about this fella (even though the reveal is already known...).

Sally taylor (sallyjanet) | 1 comments I just read Classics Reimagined, Frankenstein Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley . This Edition is AMAZING! I can't not tell you how great I thought this edition was. I loved the book before and this made it all the better! If anyone is looking for an edition to buy.. get this one!
