Post a review if you would like. At this point, spoilers are allowed.

Sara (phantomswife) | 1393 comments A good, but not a great, read for me. I was not able to really connect with the characters, so I found it interesting, like a documentary, but not captivating.

Sara I’m sorry for your loss. I agree with the connection or the lack of connection to the book/characters. I think I would have been ok with just reading 3-4 paragraphs to enlighten me on this event in history. It’s sad but I read this book just a few weeks back and nothing has really stuck with me. But like you it may have been the wrong timing personally to read it.

Read my 3-star review of The Last Ballad by Wiley Cash

Funny, you all say it better but same thoughts.

Here's my review. I apparently rated it a bit higher than most here and I am definitely not ready to say that my first Wiley Cash novel will be the last.

Sara (phantomswife) | 1393 comments Glad you enjoyed it a bit more than I did, Tom. I loved your review.

Cathrine ☯️ | 750 comments I read it when it first came out. A bit disappointing and only 3 stars from me.

Connie G (connie_g) | 506 comments I liked the book a bit more than some of the other people in the group, although the story started out slowly. Don't give up on Wiley Cash because his A Land More Kind Than Home is very good--and even has those snakes that everyone is looking for.

Agree Connie with you on Cash's first novel. I really liked A Land More Kind than Home.

As I'm reading some of these reviews, it seems that those of us criticizing this book have a problem with so many different points of view, and changing timelines, but not the writing or the story itself. Interesting. Has anyone been to a reading or book signing with Cash where he explained why he wrote it that way?

I have but i don’t remember that discussion. I do remember him saying he watered down the actual facts bc he didn’t think the reader would believe actual numbers and happenings. Ex)number of children

Franky | 346 comments I thought was the only one that would have some criticisms....lol..but yeah, I couldn't get much into this one. As much as this is a story and event that begs to have an emotional investment, I couldn't get pulled into Ella's story and felt like much of the novel was disjointed. I don't think the multiple narrative points of view were my biggest problem, but I thought it was sort of unnecessary and sort of made the book lose momentum. I guess everything over all just felt a little flat.

Camie | 105 comments This was my " reward" book before tackling Falkner which is always homework for me. Sadly I couldn't get into it at all. In fact I'm giving it two stars and truthfully I had to really push myself to finish. I loved his last book, so this was an unhappy surprise for me. I found it skipped around so much that the plot and the characters all but disappeared. There are a lot of good reviews so at first I wondered if was just my " senior" concentration. Good to see some others felt the same.

I commented on someone's review that I hoped Cash was reading some of these reviews, so hopefully he can fix this problem in the next book. Of course, he may not be the type of author who readily considers negative reviews.

Camie, it's awful when "reward" books disappoint.

message 18: by Sara (new) - rated it 3 stars

Sara (phantomswife) | 1393 comments I'm sorry, Camie. I felt the same toward this one, but hopefully your next read will be a good one. Mine was.

Franky | 346 comments Same Camie. I felt like there was a disconnect between what was happening in the novel and the emotional investment for the reader. Just didn't pull the reader in emotionally, at least that was my take. I felt like skimming parts.

I did like the aspects of telling Ella's story, though.
