The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan (6/3/18)

Amber - Stan swirled the amber-colored liquid in his glass and sniffed it approvingly. (p 250)
Bridge - Charles Bramwell Brockley was traveling alone and without a ticket on the 14:42 from London Bridge to Brighton. (p 8)
Convent - Many years later, not long after they met, Anthony and Therese were having lunch in a wine bar in Convent Garden that favored Deco over Donny Osmond and David Cassidy. (p 129)
Costume - Each one stood in turn and shed a respectable coat to reveal a risqué costume, lavish jewels, and astonishing tail feathers. (page 391)

Eternal - The silence and the stillness that followed seemed eternal. (p 101)
Exile - for he knew she was in exile at Padua - comfortable and self-imposed, but and exile nonetheless. (p 76)
Folk - The brown leather handbag which was tucked firmly into the crook of her arm was large and sturdy enough to biff any would-be muggers, who Grace was convinced were lurkingin every alley and doorway of the city, waiting to pounce on country folk like her and Geoffrey. (p 57)
Fountain - From a drawer he took a brown paper luggage label and a gold-nibbed fountain pen. (p 10)
Macabre- Eulalia had been a magpie all er life, surrounding herself with sparkle and glister, twinkle and velvet, the magical and the macabre. (p 148)

Red - He was a car dealer and drove a red Jaguar E-Type; a cliché on wheels. (p 23)
Square - The lawn was a perfect square of lush green and the fruit trees and bushes at the bottom of the garden burgeoned with the promise of late summer bounty. (p 84)
Statue - Farther into the park, two silver church candlesticks, a stuffed weasel, and a set of gold-plated dentures were secreted in the niche of the war memorial statue. (p 149)
Treasure - Often he didn't know if what he had found was trash or treasure. (p 42)
Vodka - Back in the kitchen, Freddy was whisking gravy, basting roast potatoes, stabbing boiling Brussels sprouts, and drinking vodka martinis. (p 249)

Communist - Twenty years earlier, in 1848, Karl Marx had published The Communist Manifesto - much of it written out of his time in Manchester with his friend Friedrich Engels. (p 30)

Palace - To me, it seemed a magical place, a palace of wonder and confusion. (p 10)

Underground - Each stone, and statue placed in just such an arrangement, each jackal of some pure black rock, carved centuries before, lovingly set here to guard this underground realm. (p 202)
Catacomb (Austria) - Catacombs. (p 204)
Volcano - (Japan) - He apparently had not lately thrown a virgin to the volcano goddess, because in short order his grandfather's housekeeper erupted in a lava flow of red, fiery vitriol. (p 50)

I have a question.

do misspelled words count, if they are written as they are in the book?

I found "visa versa". that made me laugh, but then it made me wonder :D

message 25: by Jan, Moderator (new)

Jan | 14217 comments Hmmmm..that's weird Rosa! You are right, that should be "vise versa". Since we are just starting this search I'm going to say no - but keep it in your back pocket in case you don't find it in the next couple months. If it doesn't show up in another place use it.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

I even googled it because I thought maybe you can write it in English that way :D

Now I'm missing a word. In German, when you take a foreign word and spell it different so it's more like German you call it Germanized. How would you say that when it happens with English? Englishized?

message 27: by Jan, Moderator (new)

Jan | 14217 comments Englisized is a word but I've never used it...lol.

Don't blame you, it even LOOKS ugly... thank you for your help :)
