Amy N. | 13 comments I read this in elementary school, so the range is 1990-2000, but the book itself seemed fairly old. I'd put it as being written most likely the '60s. It was either a chapter book or a long picture book, though I don't actually remember if it had any illustrations, now I think about it. There was a guy who was either mayor or king of a small village, possibly on an island, who hated the letter 'o' so much he banned it entirely. This led to any object whose name contained an 'o' to be destroyed and any word spoken that would have an 'o' would be pronounced as though the 'o' were gone. I still remember this one line, about a man living in the village who is getting fed up with the situation: his wife asks where he's going, and he's so angry all he can say is, "'Ut!' And ut he went." It still cracks me up every time I think about it.

The climax (view spoiler) It was pretty absurd and dryly humorous.
