Joanne (joabroda1) | 8959 comments Ten Days to D-Day: Citizens and Soldiers on the Eve of the Invasion 5 Stars

This is one of the best reads on WII that I have had in a while.

David Stafford writes 10 chapters-each chapter a day, beginning May 28th and ending in the late of hours of June 6, 1944. The author also gives us 10 people to follow through out that 10 day period. There is Churchill and Eisenhower, of course. But among the others are an American Paratrooper, a German Soldier, members of the French Resistance. The one that touched my soul though was a Canadian infantry officer and his "band of brothers" in the Regina Rifles. Having been taught American History, this was my first real knowledge of the Canadian troops. Of course, I knew they were there but never learned about them, or honestly thought about them when I read about the invasion.

Tens days to D-Day buzzes with the pace of a novel as Stafford moves from country to country and from character to character

A truly great read!

Josephine Mallory | 14 comments This sounds fabulous. I have been on a WWII kick lately, and I love books that focus on the people involved. I am adding this to my to read list. Thanks!

I too have been on a WWII kick these last few months-hope you enjoy it.
I am reading another right now Five Days that Shocked the World, a similar concept, only this book covers the last 5 days of the war.

LibraryCin | 9439 comments I tend to try to save my war reading until November (Remembrance Day), but I guess the end of May/beginning of June is a good time for D-day reading, in particular!

LibraryCin | 9439 comments And I would like to, once again, very very highly recommend
The Longest Day by Cornelius Ryan.

It was written not too long after the war, so he was able to interview people, use questionnaires, etc. of those who were actually there on D-day!
