Ellen | 2315 comments After a mere 20 minutes in a psychiatrist's office, 18-year old Susanna Kaysen was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and sent by taxi to a Massachusetts mental institution. She would spend the next 2 years of her life as an in-patient. Her memoir tells of her interactions with the staff and fellow patients. Many of her encounters seem quite humorous at first but underneath there is the dark shadow of mental illness. She does not shy away from talking about her life, her problems and her eventual recovery. I particularly liked her statement that it is not unusual for an entire family to need help and guidance through mental illness and that she felt like the designated hitter; she was chosen to represent the family throughout the treatment. It was an interesting look into an area that many of us have never had to encounter.
