Should books be kept as short as possible?

When I was younger, I was always looking for long novels. I could not be happier than when I knew I could spent numerous hours in the same new world.
Now that I am growing older, I often feel when I read a novel that if it can, then it should be shorter. I get bored with novels which lack efficiency - any piece of writing should be useful. I sometimes long for a short but excellent novel, such as this one. Is it age making me more impatient? Or should a writer be as concise as possible?

I like short books and short chapters within long books because I only read in short bursts a few times per day rather than settling down for an hour...but every now and then there's a long book which is so well written that I could happily read a page or two where a character is just preparing a snack and love it just as much as passages which develop the plot.
