Andy Love | 2104 comments A few years back I read about a story in which linguists are studying the spread of languages in north America and noticing unexplained similarities between the speech in Virginia and in Massachusetts - unexplained because (for some unknown, and seemingly rather creepy reason) the linguists have no knowledge about the fact that English-speakers came to America from something else. I thought it was a Baxter short story. Anyone ever hear of this (or read it)?

Was it in a magazine, anthology, online?
Author female or male?

Andy Love | 2104 comments I've only heard of the story, not read it; I think I remember that the author was Stephen Baxter and that it was in a collection of his, but I'm not sure.

I'll keep it in Possibly Solved until I get a copy of the collection.
