____________________________________________________
Evening all!

Hope you are all enjoying the lovely Bank holiday weather where you are...it's been roasting here today, in my little corner of Wales & that bitterly cold north wind has finally buggered orf at last too! Can't remember the last time it's been this nice for a Spring BH weekend! :)

My follow up appointment with the Ophthalmologist is in a few days, I really can't wait to get the other eye done, as my sight is so weird atm! Both eyes are currently at opposite ends of the vision spectrum, so it's a right bugger trying to focus straight atm! Ah well..it'll all come good soon enough...but with the lovely weather we're getting..i am so itching to get back to my projects now!

Right then, it's Helen's turn now..with another nice straightforward theme:- Sample Example - Tracks that sample other songs.

Noms in by Weds 10pm, thank yous kindly! :)

Looks like noms for R9 are drying up, so gonna do what Nick suggested...Round 9 noms will close on 20th May, as I'll open up R10 then. So if there are any remaining folks who haven't got a nom in yet...please add them to the themes list by then, thank you.

Here's hoping the good weather continues tomorrow, have a lovely BH Monday folks! :-)

theDuke | 5781 comments So many well known songs to choose from....but very hard to pick that perfect one! I may change this, if I find something else...but I don't think this successful artist has ever appeared on a playlist, since I joined in 2 and half years ago. Can't believe this hugely successful album is nudging 20 years old now, how times has flown by. So here's mine for now, heavily sampled the lyrics from Vera Hall's Trouble So Hard....

Rob Campbell | 477 comments After Tech,

Before my monologue, can I point out that my nomination, "Jack-Ass" by Beck, doesn't seem to be on the playlist?

Like a musical Minority Report, I've probably been punished for the future crime of my rant that I'm about to publish.

Oh dear. This is a music thread, right?
Thank God for the skip button, that's all I can say. I think that it's about time the black-coated music enforcement officers were deployed! I mean, I'm no fan of The Smiths, but Johnny Marr's guitar was about the only trace of music in that whole list!
(I know it's the "samples" round, but I've discounted the odd bit of musical genius that's been stolen and inserted between the random mish-mash of drum machines and bland, soulless posturing).

Still, it's a laugh isn't it?

Rob - you can rant all you want to but if I don't see a link, there's a fair old bet that your track won't get posted. When I am making the playlist I don't usually read the posts, all I do is scan through them for the links, I never even noticed you had nommed.

Rob Campbell | 477 comments Helen The Melon wrote: Are you a music snob, Rob?

Probably. I'm not saying that everybody should listen to the same music, or that there is only one type of good music. I can respect musicians and artists whose music I don't like - whether that is Coldplay, David Bowie, Celine Dion, Michael Bolton or whoever - but what rally grinds my gears is people who make shouty old rubbish and random sounds and pass it off as artistic.

It may come as no surprise that I don't consider a pile of random objects art just because it is stacked in a museum.

Is this makes me a music snob, so be it. But there is no malice in my comments, I just enjoy a good bit of music banter.

message 41: by Tech XXIII (new)

Tech XXIII | 6727 comments "Too deep" - i've always liked that title (never heard it either) and used it as a way to express that there's greatness and beauty to be found in the most unlikely places, i.e. i generally don't like country, but hank williams was a genius, i'm not one for jazz, but i do enjoy a bit of miles davis (relatively new thing) or jacques loussier, i'll get back to you on prog! :) if i see a great thing in a steps, or cradle of filth, or lana del rey, or avenged sevenfold, or showaddywaddy, or shirley bassey song, i will enjoy it regardless! cannae remember where i was going with this, but hey! :)

helen - no, more of a purist, as i would say (cornish mk.2)! :)

message 42: by Rob (new)

Rob Campbell | 477 comments Just found a 10-point checklist on what makes a music snob, so now I can officially say that I'm NOT a music snob!

You constantly belittle other people’s music preferences
No, but I don't mind belittling the music itself.

You think "real" music fans are few and far between
Possibly - I think a lot of people let a lot of rubbish pass for music these days.

The more popular a band becomes, the less you like it
No - 4 of my top 5 artists of all time are quite big (Springsteen, Crowded House, Tom Petty, INXS)

You prefer small shows at bars to massive concerts
No way - most small venues have the sound cranked up way too high for the size of the venue, and its most definitely bad for the ears (and sometimes painful)

You excoriate the latest generation of music
No. I've paid a lot of money to see Taylor Swift with my wife & kids - not my first choice, but I do like some of her stuff, even if the recent albums are a bit too showy for my liking.

You have a special hatred for pop music
No - love some pop music - it's probably incredibly difficult to write a catchy memorable song and artists should be applauded for it.

You think that a person’s taste in music is indicative of their personal character
No really. That's just daft.

You detest best-of albums
No - they're a good way of getting a bunch of songs for by an artist tin once place.

You love Radiohead
Definitely not - wouldn't dream of buying their music, but I can see why some people like them.

You exude the persona
No - I don't dress based on my musical preferences etc.

Fair enough, Rob. "Shouty old rubbish and random sounds" can be rather interesting sometimes. I hope you know you're a dinosaur at heart with all this "proper music" talk! ;-)

message 44: by suzysunshine7 (last edited May 11, 2018 05:42AM) (new)

suzysunshine7 | 14594 comments Personally, I am very fond of songs with samples in - they open up a whole new world of Music to me, spanning across so many decades and generations, that I would probably have never come across all by myself.

My nomination was always either going to be Mr Scruff or Fatboy Slim - both of which have resulted in me listening to a much wider variety of different Music genres, such as Jazz, which is a genre that I don't really like very much on the whole.

Sampling has sent me off on Musical journeys of exploration - which other Artists with entirely their own original work obviously don't create through me listening to their Music ;o>
