Nicole D. | 1497 comments King Leopold was a wanker.

Every time I read books about colonialism, I get so angry at how the indigenous people are treated, and then I remember that this kind of crap still goes on and it feels overwhelming.

This was a very (very) detailed history of the Congo and in a sense, the beginning of understanding slavery. This is a snapshot of the horrors of colonialism and while it was illuminating to understand what happened to the Congo, it doesn't even scratch the surface of Africa let alone the rest of the world.

This was a pretty dry book. I don't regret reading it, but I can't say it enriched my life in any way. Mostly I just feel sick.

It does make you feel ill.
