Idit | 1028 comments My Antonia is a wonderful book
It's set at the late 19 century Nebraska.
Jim, a boy of 10 who's parents die is sent to his grandparents farm in the prairie. On the same train comes an immigrant family from Europe with a daughter called Antonia.

We see the story from Jim's eyes. With a lot of love to the local characters, and child curiosity.

The people are so lovable and alive, the seasons of the year, nature in general and the farm life are described as beautifully as a painting.

I love Jim's infatuation with the immigrants and how he sees them as the real heroes of that time and Antonia is so feisty and full of life

I feel like I was given a slice of life.
It really is an extraordinary story - even though it's actually very small and un-heroic

as for strong women - if Antonia is not enough, there is Lena Lingard, there are the other hired girls, and quite a few more
