Our first book for the 2018 Adult Reading Challenge is going to be A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. Bennie Salazar, an aging former punk rocker and record executive, and Sasha, the passionate, troubled young woman he employs confront their pasts in this powerful story about how rebellion ages, influence corrupts, habits turn to addictions, lifelong friendships fluctuate and turn, and how art and music have the power to redeem.

We're using the prompt, a book about a musician/music group/genre, to celebrate our Summer Reading theme this summer, Libraries Rock!

Hello! My name is Brianna and I am the moderator for this discussion. I am the librarian for our Escalon branch at SSJCPL.

I am so excited to be a part of this new online feature. I can't wait to discuss this book with you and hear your thoughts. I will also be chiming in when it's time to pick a new book or topic.

I started A Visit from the Goon Squad yesterday and am loving it so far. I can't wait to hear what you think! In about a week we can start talking about what book you want to read next. Extra points if you pick something inspired by one of our reading challenge prompts!

I'm almost done with this first book club selection and am loving it so far. I read an article where Jennifer Egan described the novel as a concept album and, as I near the end, I definitely get what she's saying. The stories may all be about different characters and yet all of those characters lives are intertwined in some way shape or form. I'm excited to see where this ends!
