Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris

Summary

Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace: he has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You'd like to get to know Grace better. But it's difficult, because you realize Jack and Grace are never apart. Some might call this true love.

Picture this: a dinner party at their perfect home, the conversation and wine flowing. They appear to be in their element while entertaining. And Grace's friends are eager to reciprocate with lunch the following week. Grace wants to go, but knows she never will. Her friends call—so why doesn't Grace ever answer the phone? And how can she cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim?

And why are there bars on one of the bedroom windows?

The perfect marriage? Or the perfect lie?

I read this book a year or so ago, I loved the ending.

Jenny (diggensjenny) Sorry, Gia I will not be participating in this discussion of this book. I tried to read this book for another group and it made me sick. I hope everyone enjoys it and joins the discussion.

Beth (techeditor) | 1013 comments I read this. Here's what I thought ( no spoilers ).

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS tells you by its title that something is going on at home that puts the lie to outward appearances. So it’s safe to say that this book is about a bad marriage. But my calling it a “bad marriage” is like the author Mary Kubica calling it “unsettling.” Both are understatements.

A woman gives up her career because her fiancé, a busy lawyer, fears he will hardly ever see her after they are married. He is happy to share responsibility for her younger sister who has Down Syndrome. But what does he have in store for them?

The story is simple, no great shakes. It could be told in a segment of a TV series like “Law and Order.” It isn’t, as some reviews have called it, “unputdownable.” For me, it was the opposite. I found it so unsettling, sickening, and repetitive that I had to put the book down frequently.

It made me sick, too. I think it will be interesting to see what others think as they read more of the book.

Suzanne | 29 comments I really enjoyed it and got obsessed about seeing what would happen. (Loved the ending too.) However, I can totally see why it could upset people!

Dawn (dawnella77) | 32 comments I really enjoyed this book and couldn’t stop reading .I became upset and frustrated that Grace couldn’t leave . The scary part of the book is that many women are in similar relationships not able to leave and abusers use family members and threats to instill fear. I enjoyed the ending and the suspense throughout the book as Grace tried to plan her escape.

Kirsten (kmcripn) | 113 comments I loved this book. One of the best thrillers I'd read in a long time. A real page turner, the evil of the villain was palpable.

Ninna | 32 comments I read this last year and it drove me nuts. I found it so frustrating because I felt like Grace wouldn't truly act that way and did have other options to escape. I always get irritated with these psychopaths that are all knowing and smarter beyond reason than anyone else. I don't think that's actually true and, although I understand authors take certain liberties for the sake of story progression, it tends to make me a bit crazy. I read her second book and, although similar in that vein, I found the premise more believable because it sets up the possibility of mental issues from the start which would make some of the characters doubts and reactions understandable. I didn't get that with this one. The woman was self sufficient and smart and then does a bunch of stupid things that made me mad. lol! Am I the only one that reacted that way?

Linda (beaulieulinda117gmailcom) | 1298 comments I also read this last year and I could not thought much of it because I don't remember to much about the book.

Erica | 46 comments I started reading this book this morning and thought I will read about 50 pages and I'm still reading and I'm on page 136.
The writing in this book is good and it flows easily. I really like how the chapters alternate between present and past and you are kind of always waiting to finish the chapters to get to another one. It's like you almost have two stories.
SPOILERS AHEAD
I do feel the same frustration as some of the others about how smart woman like Grace has stayed in this situation and not put an end to it somehow from the beginning when she found out.
Then again when you are reading a book, you are looking a situation from outside and it is more easier to see things clearly than when you are actually living in it.
I do think Esther suspects or actually knows what is going on with Grace's and Jack's marriage when they were on lunch together. It seems she deliberately repeats her own phone number so Grace has time to memorize it. What do you think?

Sonja (sonjapple) I started reading this last night and are about 65% in...I just love Millie! I admit the plot might be unsettling to some, especially the mental abuse (which is obvious some of us are no strangers to), but it's nice to read a book about abuse that doesn't involve the ever popular drunken wife-beater. I'm eager to see how it plays out! (ps. I hope he dies!)

Britney (tarheels) | 108 comments I read this earlier this year & liked it. It had me actually thinking that maybe it was gonna take us in a different direction & she was making up the story. I have read books like that.
No one deserves to be treated like that. I just wanted to jump right into the book & take Jack down. Millie was very smart to figure out what was going on.

Jenny (diggensjenny) B.A. Paris did a great job in highlighting that family violence is not only physically it can be emotional as well and the devastating effect that emotional abuse has on a person. It is very hard to recover from emotional abuse and especially when society does not see what is happening to families behind closed doors and predator is well liked in the community. Reading Behind Close Door was very hard on me because it reminded me of my childhood with my father. Everyone except his family adored my father, and no one knew what was happening behind our front door.

Well said Ninna. You are NOT the only one who feels this way. I disliked the book (in part) for exactly the reasons you stated. I am truly baffled by all the rave reviews.

Lagniappe and Ninna I think that this book is going to be one of those books that you either love it or hate it. Also, I think each individual reader interprets the plot of this book differently. I rate this book only 2 Stars.

Kirsten (kmcripn) | 113 comments In a way, I agree. I find it a very uncomfortable book to read. (And I was not a vicitim of abuse.) But I did think it was one of the best thrillers I've read recently.

You're not alone. See my comment above.
