It is a disturbing book and an important one. I knew a secret was going to be revealed, but when the depravity of the secret is made obvious, it is overwhelming. We go to great lengths to rationalize killing people, although I don't think that is the point.

We are all going to die. I think the author is speeding up the process so the students are keenly aware of their mortality and imagining how they might deal with it. To me, the book is about how much the students care for one another, and how decent they are, because they know death is near.
