Tom Hazard is currently 439 years old. He has a rare condition where he ages very lowly. He has just returned to London as a history teacher. The book alternates between the present and periods of time from Tom's past, though these sections aren't told in chronological order. The book has an interesting premise but I think the author could have done a lot more with it. The present day story is not given much detail, it's used more as a stopping point in between past periods of Tom's life.
