Rebekah (bekalynn) We w took the whole family, Me, husband, teen twins, 7 yr old grandson and a nanny on a cruise at Christmas and I wish we had never gone.
I would like to take a Riverboat cruise on the Mississippi River or Ohio River. Not the touristy 1 hour ones at New Orleans but the kind where you go all the way up the river and stop in places like Hannibal, Mo and St Francisville, LA as people did in Mark Twain's time. everyone I know who took one enjoyed it and often preferred it to a ocean cruise.

It's not normal summer weather for Fairbanks, either, where 80s are not uncommon.

Yes, by all means whine--that's a 20 degree F difference, NOT what you are used to and 85 is hot.

Valerie, I cannot imagine NOT reading. I read signs when driving and billboards, and cereal boxes...and just anything with writing on it. And, a book? Well, that is my escape and, to me, heaven.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Yay! It has cooled down. We hit 91 at my house on Tuesday, but today? Currently 54 and fog - we might hit 60 today.

Bea Valerie, I bought a new lawn mower yesterday and was looking at the manual. NO WORDS! All the directions were pictures...including a rabbit for going faster and a turtle for going slower! My neighbor told me it was so the manufacturer did not need to put the directions for use in words...in multiple languages. Maybe so, yet somehow I think it dumbs down the directions.

I'm not good with pictures, I think I'd have a hard time understanding that.

Elizabeth, it took me much longer than reading words would have done. Of course, most of the instructions were understandable or figure-outable if you already knew something about working the lawn mower!

Karin This discussion of reading and how we love to read, etc, reminds me of this music video. Have any of you seen this before? Please note that if anyone has epilepsy there are a few parts with flashing lights.

Valerie Brown | 3293 comments I think we are at day 5 (or 6???) of a nasty heat wave. I feel like it's affected my brain, or at least my memory... ha, ha. The temps have been hovering around 33C with high humidity. So, it's been a forced vacation from the garden and other outdoor activities in which I have had lots of time to read (guilt free!).

Yes, we've had temperatures as high as 36 C one day--very high for around here, and then it's been hovering around 33-34 most days (one day 35 C). And humid. This is all above our normal hot weather here.

Here's a couple more books set in New Mexico, Jayme:

The Atomic Weight of Love by Elizabeth J. Church

Fire Season: Field Notes from a Wilderness Lookout by Philip Connors

Karin I found this list doing a google search

https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

Most books about the Manhattan project will apply as it took place there: https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...

I know I've read more novels there than Brave New World, but they weren't on the NM list.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2601 comments thank you Karin :)

The Green Glass Sea is one i've read, but check the lexile if that's important. I am kicking myself because I just read one set there in the past couple of years and cannot remember the title, nor did I have a New Mexico shelf at that time.

eta Nevada Barr novels are mostly set there, apparently. I still can't recall the novel I read that I liked.

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments Hi Karen Michelle.... i see you just posted We Have Always Lived in the Castle.
By sheer coincidence, I am reading See Now Then by Jamaica Kincaid for 10.2...and it takes place in the Shirley Jackson House...which I surmise Kincaid lived in at one time...and which I suspect was the inspiration for your read and other Jackson works.

BTW, I don't recommend the book, I'm halfway through...and it's headed for a 1 star review.

Elizabeth (Alaska) It's Halfway Weekend! How is everyone doing?

I've found myself rearranging books for Listopia Tag and adding in other books unexpectedly. Still, I'm about where I thought I'd be in terms of number of books read.

message 185: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 3293 comments Surprisingly, I'm on track.

June was a very slow reading month for me. I'm not sure why, perhaps For Whom the Bell Tolls was the problem - I liked it, but my goodness it was SLOW moving. I read it in small portions through the whole month(!), and felt guilty about it the rest of the time! ha, ha...

Anyhow, finishing it seems to have breathed new life into my reading. I am hoping to accomplish a mega finish this season. The heat + humidity has been keeping me indoors in the AC, reading!

I rated See Now Then at 3 stars which is pretty much my lowest rating because I would abandon a book I didn't like at all! Anyway, it wasn't very memorable because I forgot about the Jackson house connection;)

message 187: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 4341 comments I'm a bit behind. I'm halfway through RwS, but have only read three of my Listopia Tag books ... I could move some around later, though, if it seems worthwhile.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Rosemary wrote: "I could move some around later, though, if it seems worthwhile. "

And it may not be. This is probably the lowest scoring sub-challenge we've done unless you can take full advantage of the bonus points. But it is summer (for most of us) and we thought something a bit more laid back would be appreciated.

I almost always force myself to finish a book....even if I'm hating it....and I'm hating See Now Then....but, I'm almost done. I'm taking it in little pieces at a time...interspersing another book or two before I go back to read another chapter.

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1734 comments I am more than half way through the Listopia subchallenge but I have a couple of jumbos in the second half so don’t know if I will get through it. I know I won’t make it through the main challlenge.

message 191: by Megan (new)

Megan (gentlyread) | 358 comments I'm hoping to get a Mega Finish this season, and I'm on track: I'm halfway through Listopia Tag (and oh gosh I appreciate it's so flexible), and I have five more tasks for RwS. I'd also like to get to something for 30.1, too, but probably not until after I cross the Mega Finish off my to do list. :)

True, but if it got me the 200 mega finish points it might be worth it. I suspect the maths will be too complex for me, though!

Elizabeth (Alaska) Rosemary wrote: "but if it got me the 200 mega finish points it might be worth it. "

I suspect you're very right about that. 100 for the LT finish plus the 200 Mega, means you could look at it as if it adds 30 points to every LT book. If you think you are in a position to get a mega, you should definitely move things around.

Sam (theliteraryhooker) | 1008 comments I've been out of the loop lately! I don't think I'll get even close to finishing this season (maybe someday I will!) but life has been very much getting in the way of my reading lately. My husband got a promotion so we're in the process of moving from Ottawa to Toronto, which on top of work and classes and everything else has eaten away a lot of my time! Not to mention the stress of moving across the province which is making it harder for me to focus on my reading lately. I've been straying from my planned books in favour of easy reads lately as an escape. Hoping that by the Fall season we'll be nice and settled and I'll have more time for books!

message 197: by Kazen (new)

Kazen | 623 comments I won't get close to finishing this season but then again, I rarely do. ;) Some big books have put a dent in my reading but with two readathons coming up I'm hoping to get back into the swing of things!

message 198: by Bea (new)

Bea I am doing very poorly this season. I suspect it has to do with personal issues moving through my life and less time reading. I am also reading bigger books, which takes time. And, I have found that I can only concentrate on one or two books at a time. So...mostly this season, I have planned.

message 199: by Lalitha (new)

Lalitha (falcon_) | 85 comments Surprisingly slow reading from my end as well, more to do with unforeseen work related travel. I hope to accelerate on reading but without a momentum it's hard to keep going.

Congratulations to your husband! Toronto will be quite a change due to the size plus the Lake effect on the weather. I lived in Ottawa & Nepean for 4 years, but about 20 years after that my brother lived in Toronto for 7 or 8 years.

I've moved many times and moves of 400 km are harder than local moves, but the consolation is that least you can drive it within less than a day. Plus, it's a great time to declutter and get rid of things you no longer need.

I hope you enjoy the change and all the living roofs they have in Toronto now. Not that you can see them from the ground, but the aerial photos are amazing. For those who don't know, all new developments after 2009 or 2010 have to have roofs with green vegetation on them, not necessarily grass.
