Rebekah (bekalynn) A couple of us have read The Nickel Boys for the group reads task and maybe a few of you had read it before. It is based on the true institution of the Dozier School for Boys in Marianna, Florida. It’s one of those incidents in our history that is shameful and terribly painful to think about but as most such things in our society are quickly swept away to make room for the newest divorce, terrorist attack, strange celebrity baby name, Trump tweet or what have you, we mustn’t let these boys be forgotten.
I also want to stress that though the book focuses on black boys, the school housed more than one race. I know race is a HUGE problem, believe me I’m a European Southerner whose Southern ancestry precedes the Revolutionary War and I believe Black Lives have not mattered for pretty much all that history and it needs to be corrected ASAP, however the white boys, Latino boys and all mixes who were abused and even murdered there should not be ignored either. They were important too and this crime while not racial was against class, poverty, children, disadvantaged and the helpless and is too g
Horrific to ever be repeated. Our own Holocaust.

Rebekah, I have copied and pasted your comments from the Completed Tasks thread into the Book Chat thread.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I could make this comment in the Mysteries Challenge discussion thread, or elsewhere, as far that goes. But, personally, I'm excited about my progress on my 20th Century women author's challenge and that I'm occasionally finding some two-fers with the Mysteries.

I see the possibility of my reaching a round 80/100 on the Women by year's end. I might be cannibalizing my reads/gains for next year, but I can't help myself.

Good for you! There are a lot of nice overlaps in those two challenges.

And if not, Happy Holidays :)

I'm stuffed from luncheon and have skipped dinner - winding down with a glass of red before bed ;)

Valerie Brown | 3293 comments Yes, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

This year the weatherman was vindicated and we've woken up to a white Christmas. It's our first major snowfall for the winter, and it's a pretty one. Too bad it can't stop with just one successful one..... ha, ha.

Ann (lit_chick_77) | 551 comments I lost my reading mojo.
I’m trying to get through The Door and I think I need to give up and move on. But it killed my enthusiasm for reading.
It’s not even bad, it was just so slow that reading anything (or even watching anything) seems like So Much Work.

I want an attention span back!

Set it aside! NOW! Maybe you'll want to come back to it and maybe not. You'll never get to every book in the world anyway so find something else. (Advice from an old fart ...)

I gave up and moved onto Ring, and I’m already 100 pages in.
It’s going to be a bit before I try any more “literary fiction”. Give me GENRE.

Bryony (bryony46) | 247 comments Happy New Year everyone!

I missed most of the last challenge and the first month of the winter challenge due to an unexpected (but very welcome) move to the other side of the country. Now that we’re in our new home I’m hoping I’ll be able to find some reading time again so I’ve been setting myself some 2021 reading goals and I’m looking forward to completing some of this season’s challenge.

message 1928: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I can't believe we're at the halfway mark already. Where does the time go? How are you all doing?

I'm one-away from finishing Name of the Game, but am saving that for next month. I have been happily looking through my list of possibles for RwS tasks. I have so many more than I can hope to get to. I marked some as probably just barely having enough time and then when I'll see another. I guess it's not such a terrible problem to have.

message 1929: by Kim (new)

Kim (kmyers) | 438 comments I just went through my RwS unfinished tasks and discovered that I used one of the books for NoG that was meant to be for RwS. I guess I'll just have to read a different one.

If it still works for NotG, you can switch it. Post in the Completed Tasks thread including the Post Number you want to move. Then post exactly as you would wanted to originally.

I agree, how is that possible?!

I am about 2/3 of the way through a mega. However, I allowed myself to be distracted by a shiny new to me mystery series (although it's not new, just has been on my TBR for awhile). Even though I am about 1/2 way through a VERY good book for the NoTG, I needed a cozy to compete with our recent COVID news.

If I stay on track until the end of January (this being determined by library due dates!) I should be able to finish as planned.

message 1932: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 4341 comments I am exactly halfway through the RwS tasks and have two more to read for NotG. But like Valerie, I am easily distracted by mysteries!

message 1933: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5296 comments I'm getting close to an RwS tasks finish and then it will be on to finishing NotG!

message 1934: by Kathleen (itpdx) (new)

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1734 comments I have been concentrating on NotG and have one more book to go (a chunkster of course). I did get distracted by a Christmas book. There is no way I can also finish RwS so then it will be which task qualifying books jump to the top of my TBR.

message 1935: by Kathleen (itpdx) (new)

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1734 comments Has anyone else been getting sketchy followers? Profiles following you that have supposedly been on GR for years but have few or no books and have websites from Russia or wherever the tag px is. I don’t click on them. Sometimes reusing the same profile picture. Is there a way to report these?

message 1936: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Jan 17, 2021 08:21AM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) You can flag the profile picture when there is one. You can also use the Contact Us link and send them a link to the user's page. (I think t hey've made the Contact Us link hard to find, but can be gotten via the "About Us" link at the bottom of every page.)

When I get users who I don't even want following me, I delete them from my followers. You can find that list on your friends page. They are in order of follows, so the most recent will be on the last page.

Yes. Although maybe not as sketchy as you've noticed. I've just been ignoring them, but now that I know I can delete them I may do that.

I've also noticed random men who would like to be my 'friend'. Of course, this has happened extremely occasionally over the years, but I think I've had 2 in the last two weeks.

message 1938: by Kathleen (itpdx) (new)

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1734 comments I deleted them this morning. If any more show up I will start flagging and reporting. Thanks.

message 1939: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5296 comments I get them occasionally as well and this reminds me to check my profile for followers again.

message 1940: by Deedee (new)

Deedee | 2292 comments I'm a third of the way through RwS and a third of the way through NotG. At this point that means I can finish one or the other one but probably not both.

message 1941: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 3293 comments Instead of doing something I 'should' have been doing I developed another Name of the Game plan. This time with 8/10 being mysteries for the mystery challenge. I doubt I will get through it before the season ends, but even if I knock off a few years for that challenge I will be happy. I did have different goals for round 1 of NotG, but it often seems that I need to read a set of books to understand these chart based games better.

I know the problem...... my husband and I were able to combine interests there (and be in a warm climate!) so it was a win-win.

Yes, and faster reading.

I can't imagine wanting the long horizontal lines of landscape... unless I had very poor eyesight and needed the words to be too big for portrait.

Yes - portrait. Looks more like a proper book!

message 1950: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Thank you. Yes, I would think it looks more like a proper book and I'm glad to know about the easier to hold. I did wonder about line length and whether it would be too short in Portrait. I love my ancient Kindle, and will not be giving it up as long as it works. I was thinking about a friend and a way to widen her access. I'm not sure she'd even consider digital, but thought I'd at least have information available.
