Agreed! Great reading, Beth and Tien!

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) | 1174 comments Thank you. I got off to a good start and was curious as to how fast I could get to a megafinish. PnM was fun! The geography based sub-challenges and I are not friends although I sometimes find unexpectedly interesting library books when I try to meet them.

message 1057: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3119 comments aw, thanks... I'm loving PnM and have been plowing through a number of easy (usually crime fiction) books on audio ;)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Do others of you see this section in the Community Reviews section of a book page? To be honest, I'd almost forgotten it is there, but think it could be useful for some tasks.

Would it be helpful if we started a thread in the Members Corner section for Tips and Tricks?

message 1059: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3119 comments NEVER!!! I have never noticed that before lol

message 1060: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 3298 comments Huh!.... I may have noticed that, but I tend to look at the average rating and then jump over that line to the actual reviews. It probably goes without saying that I've never used it.

I would find a 'tips and tricks' thread helpful.

Elizabeth (Alaska) OK, I created a thread. In order to not have conversations there, I've closed it, but if anyone has something they'd like included there, please let us know and we can add it.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Just slightly past halfway. We've had two megas and some PnM finishers. Great stuff! How is everyone else doing?

I got my monster jumbo finished and am now back to my PnM books.

message 1063: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 3298 comments I am well positioned to get a mega at some point in Nov. - if I chose to. However, as I knew at the beginning of the season - even with a strong start - I'm a bridesmaid once again! ha, ha....

By the end of next week I will have accomplished the reading I hoped for in the truncated 'prize' timeline. Because of that I've decided to veer off and recently finalized another PnM2 plan. We are going to Victoria for a week (for my FiL's 90th Bday), and that means reading from the kobo. I can get a jump on a second PnM2 plan with these e-books. (I planned to use 'real' books for most of my RwS tasks.)

Sorry, I just cannot read much for pleasure right now. School is very demanding at the moment. There are constant new great ideas in education. The current great idea basically involved having all English teachers to stop teaching texts that have been used in the past and come up with new harder texts. I am spending endless hours in training sessions at the moment; not to mention reworking the curriculum.

message 1065: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 4360 comments I'm hoping to finish RwS but I've barely started PnM so I doubt I will get a mega finish!

My reading has really slowed down this year. I am working a lot more, I suppose that's why!

message 1066: by Bea (new)

Bea I am really sliding backwards. Last season I read 11 books. So far I have only read 2 that are on my plan. Time to see if any of the others that I have read so far will fit the RwS tasks.

message 1067: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5296 comments I'm on track to finish. I'm working on my last PnM book and have only a couple of RwS books left. I always have way more books in my plan than I can ever read in 3 months, though! I'm working on pulling back on that and reading books I've purchased, but a big part of the fun is discovering something new!

message 1071: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3119 comments 3 books away from finished the 3rd & last round of PnM. Not fussed about Mega Finish - 9 tasks to be completed though I'm partway through 3 books for those. We'll see...

message 1072: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 3298 comments When I had a look at the scoreboard last night, I noticed I am (barely) the most strategic reader at this point. This has never happened before in my time with RwS, and I would suspect, unlikely to happen again. Last night I thought Kate had made a mistake, this morning I'm still surprised - ha, ha.....!

Elizabeth (Alaska) Has anyone used Amazon's Prime Reading? I'm sort of confused about it. There is also Prime First Reads where you can get a book for a month. But it looks like Prime Reading you can borrow a book for as long as you want, but you are limited to 10 titles. Do I have this right?

message 1079: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments Hmmmm...I didn't know there were two different Amazon plans.... I think I am on the second one because I get the offer each month for the ten free books...and sometimes choose one...which usually triggers me to knock off some other book because of the 10 book limit. But, being a member also means many other books are free or discounted.

message 1080: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I'm currently interested in Heat and Dust, which is free with Prime Reading. Of course, I know I'm just borrowing it, but that's OK - I borrow from the library, too. It's the length of time I get to keep it that interests me.

message 1081: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments well....I have been able to keep the books on my list as long as I want, at least I think so, I only remove them when I replace them with another choice.

That's excellent! That's the way I was reading the rules, but thought I must be seeing things. LOL Anyway, I downloaded the above book. It works this season, I know, but I was worried I could keep it only for a month, and (don't tell anyone) I'm already planning next season.

And to sort of clarify - when we get ideas, we have to see whether they're viable. We think next season is going to be marvelous, of course, but we do our best to make sure any wrinkles are smoothed out before we start sharing.

Understood. BTW, I checked out the book you mentioned.... I discovered that I had already read it. I have no memory of it...even after reading the description...but, I did give it 4 stars. Boy...I'm getting old.

Oh boy. I have that problem. That is why I try to write a review of some kind for each book but that doesn't always work either!

Prime First Reads: every month you get to choose one of their selected books. It goes into your kindle library and stays there forever. It's them giving you a free book for being a Prime member and you get one every month (sometimes they have a special event where you actually get to choose two selections). Again, they are yours to keep and you never have to "return" them.

Prime Reading: with your Prime account, you get up to borrow up to ten books at any given time (the books you're allowed, as you have already seen, are labeled "free with Prime"). You can keep them as long as you want (I've had a few for well over a year--books I know I want to read and don't want to forget about but just haven't gotten around to yet), but you can only borrow ten. If you find another title you want to add, you have to return one you have checked out. Again, there is no time limit to the borrowing...I think the only time there'd be a forced return would be if you were no longer a Prime member.

I think those are the two programs to which you're referring? Yeah, I love free books :-)

message 1091: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Yay! I thought I understood the Prime Reading, but I wasn't sure how long you got to keep the books. I don't mind borrowing - it's like the library, except with the library you get a limited time.

I admit I haven't seen a book on First Reads that I wanted to read, but you never know!

message 1092: by Bea (new)

Bea Hmm. I'm a Prime member but mainly for Prime Video since I discontinued my cable TV plan. And, I really like Prime Video, but I had not yet discovered Prime Reading or First Reads. More to this Prime than I thought!

message 1093: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I got Prime for the free shipping.

message 1094: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) | 1174 comments Me too on the free shipping. But I select a First Reads book for free every month even if I dont want to read them right now because sometimes they qualify for tasks later.... especially when they have something non-western or translated. It's not like it takes up space as long as I don't download it.

message 1095: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Oh, great idea. I'll have to start looking at those a little more closely.

Earlier this year (I think it was) Amazon had 10 free titles from Amazon Crossing. I picked up several of those, sort of for the same translated reason, but they looked like something I'd enjoy too.

I am a Prime member. I signed up for shipping actually. I "checked out" some Prime books and then forgot about them for over a year. Really! They were still there and usable. I just never read them. I prefer physical books or going to a library. I do use my Kindle some, but usually the classics I like are free, so it does not matter if they are on Prime or not.

Thought I'd bring this over here...

I liked The White Earth too. Unfortunately, I've already given my copy away or I'd be happy to post it to you. It's one of those underrated books though so might be hard to get a copy whilst Scrublands is still relatively new plus sequel has just been released so lots of copies around.
