Maryann (susannahmio) | 8 comments This book was set in California, possibly Big Sur or Monterrey. We think the cover had a burning tree on the front. Either mystery or thriller. Probably published 1992-1999. One of the main characters (a young girl) was a caretaker for an elderly person. Eerie feel, gloomy, set in a mansion or an estate. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Standalone or part of a series? Does it feature an amateur sleuth, police detective, neither, or other?

Longshot, The Medusa Tree?
Twenty-two-year-old Marget, pregnant and unmarried, retreats to the Northern California home of her grandmothers, Gerda and Fan. The extended visit, ostensibly to help the two elderly women cope with the trauma of Gerda's upcoming knee surgery, will also allow Marget the time she needs to decide on the direction she wants her life to take
