Minnow is a witch/sorceress/enchantress who has a demon familiar named Offal (he eats trash) and lives near the border between her magical country and the scientific country in hopes no one will ask for her help, only a young man from the bordering scientific country finds her. The young man’s brother from his magical family has gotten into trouble (again!) and he wants Min to accompany him on a quest to save him. The two countries have a practice of trading infants who are born with the opposing affinity and both Min and the young man were trades, only Min was kidnapped during the trade and held captive in the form of a minnow by an evil enchanter for years before she was rescued. They also encounter a cat familiar who was punished for her part in not preventing the kidnapping. Published 1970’s - 1990’s range.
