Good thought but I don’t think that’s it. The description says it’s “wordless” and the book I’m thinking of definitely has text, and I think the pictures were slightly less realistic.

I think it might be the same book. I remember the grapes! I wish that one was solved!

What I remember is a kid walking home from school in the city (possibly New York) passing all kinds of shops like a grocery store and a bakery. The kid stops in each one of them to talk to the shopkeeper and asks for a donation for a party (or something) that's happening, so the grocery store owner gives a basket of apples (or something), the baker gives some day-old pastries, etc.
It's a picture book and I remember images of the kid walking down the street. I lived in the suburbs and walked to school and remember thinking how cool it would be to pass a bunch of shops on my walk to school - that was my #1 impression from this book that's stuck with me ever since.
This has been driving me crazy for many years and I have looked on and off for this book without success!
