When stable hand Nolan Price learns from his dying mother that he is actually the son of the Earl of Stainsby, his plans for a future with kitchen maid Hannah Burnham are shattered. Once he is officially acknowledged as the earl's heir, Nolan will be forbidden to marry beneath his station.

Unwilling to give up the girl he loves, he devises a plan to elope--believing that once their marriage is sanctioned by God, Lord Stainsby will be forced to accept their union. Nolan (view spoiler)[I liked Nolan, but he should have stood up to his father in regards to his wife. He made the decision to marry her, so he should have told him that hiding her from the everyone at the party was wrong. (hide spoiler)]

Hannah (view spoiler)[Hannah was silly, always jumping to conclusions and making hasty decisions. She decided to leave and go to her aunt's house, told Nolan it was for her health and for him to stay there to work on his relationship with his father. Then blames him for not coming to get her and thinking he doesn't want to be married to her. When he said "I will not sacrifice you in order to become his son.", so he made it clear he loved her and put her above anyone else. (hide spoiler)]

Iris (view spoiler)[While I liked Iris, a lot actually, she came across as way too modern for that time period. Now maybe an older member of the aristocracy could get away with her behavior, but I find it hard to believe. (hide spoiler)]
