The horse's name was Christo and he was a chestnut colour.
Plot-line, if I remember correctly, was that the horse (Christo) could never be a horse that could be ridden as a hack, and the young groom attempts to save him from the glue factory, by proving otherwise.
Can remember the illustrated cover very clearly - the groom is sitting on top of the Christo (a chestnut horse), patting his neck with a tree and red-brick wall. Groom is wearing a 'flat-cap" and tweed jacket with older style jodhpurs.
It was not a series book, and the author was possibly male if I remember correctly.
