Welcome to the Best Picture Quarterly Challenge!

Duration: April 1 - June 30

Completion Levels:
Level 1: Complete five of the challenges.
Level 2: Complete ten of the challenges.
Level 3: Complete all of the challenges.

Instructions:
Instead of doing a "hunt" type challenge, I thought I'd use the Oscars' Best Picture winners of the last fifteen years to choose a genre, setting, or character type.

Books cannot be repeated in multiple categories and you cannot use the same item more than once. For example, you cannot use one books to fulfill two tasks.

All books must be read in the duration of the challenge. Please do not start any books you plan to use before January 1st.

If you have any questions, ask in this thread!

Tasks

The Shape of Water: Read a paranormal romance.

Moonlight: Read a queer romance.

Spotlight: Read a romance with a journalist or reporter character. Bloggers also accepted.

Birdman: Read a romance with an actor or actress.

12 Years a Slave: Read a historical romance by a Black author.

Argo: Read a book that's been adapted into some other form of media. (This one is tough, so even "rumors" of an adaption will count, as well as anything picked up by Passionflix.)

The Artist: Read a book set between 1895 - 1936 (the Silent Film era).

The King's Speech: Read a romance with a royal character.

The Hurt Locker: Read a romance with a soldier.

Slumdog Millionaire: Read a contemporary romance set outside of the U.S.

No Country for Old Men: Read a contemporary western romance.

The Departed: Read a romantic suspense or a romance set in Massachusetts.

Crash: Read a romance set in California.

Million Dollar Baby: Read a romance with a female athlete.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King: Read a fantasy novel. Fantasy romance accepted!

Feel free to plan your books out in advance or fill in as you go!

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 248 comments All right, the challenges continue! Thanks, Amanda!

Going for all 15, and it looks challenging.
Update 6-3: 15/15, FINISHED!!
Fav books - In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez and Topaz by Beverly Jenkins

The Shape of Water: Archangel by Sharon Shinn 4 Stars…
'Biblicalish' battle of wills between chosen one heroine and righteous archangel hero.
Moonlight: Fury's Death by Brey Willows 2 Stars…
Great premise but perfunctory and predictable.
Spotlight: My So-Called Bollywood Life by Nisha Sharma 3 Stars…
Adorable, engaging, low-angst and very satisfying.
Birdman: The Bashful Bride by Vanessa Riley 3 Stars…
Historical romance, a bit YA and fantastical, about a heiress escaping forced marriage by eloping with famous acting hero crush.
12 Years a Slave: Topaz by Beverly Jenkins 5 Stars…
Amazingly engrossing historical about strong smart newspaperwoman and protective yet non-smothering lawman. Loved it!
Argo: In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez 5 Stars…
Novelization about the tragic yet triumphant true story of the Mirabel sisters' and their fight to overthrow a corrupt regime. Loved it!
The Artist: Flying Too High by Kerry Greenwood 4 Stars… My comfort read: Phryne Fisher saves the day and makes everyone's life better through great food, delicious fashion, sparkling wit and a loving found family.
The King's Speech: A Queen from the North by Erin McRae 4 Stars…
Contemporary alternate history England royal romance with scientist heroine and reserved crown prince.
The Hurt Locker: Claiming Janna by Siera London 3 Stars…
A trifle confusing (perhaps should have read the other books in the series!), full of action and many military characters.
Slumdog Millionaire: All In by Simona Ahrnstedt 4 Stars…
Swedish contemporary high powered business battles between glorious yet still approval seeking heroine and scrappy self made hardass hero.
No Country for Old Men: Wild Horses by Asha King 3 Stars…
Fun, steamy contemporary set in Wyoming with horses, a celiblogger heroine in hiding and a moody, hunky cowboy hero.
The Departed: Hot Response by Shannon Stacey 3 Stars…
Contemporary first responder hero and heroine with playboy past and needy family.
Crash: Destiny's Captive by Beverly Jenkins 4 Stars…
Strong women, respectful men, historical, pirate lady.
Million Dollar Baby: Fire on the Ice by Tamsen Parker 3 Stars…
Incredibly intense winter games sports romance with two badass heroines.
The Lord of the Rings: The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold 4 Stars…
Epic dark high fantasy with a touch of romance.

Jae | 127 comments Fun! I'm all in

15/15

Complete April 16 The Shape of Water: Read a paranormal romance.
Frozen by Meljean Brook; The dude is descended from Frost Giants, but I always think of this as The Abominable Snowman plus wang. 4 stars

Complete April 12 Moonlight: Read a queer romance.
How to Blow It with a Billionaire by Alexis Hall; m/m billionaire contemporary romance, written by a queer dude. Lots of queer rep in this. 4 stars

Complete April 8 Spotlight: Read a romance with a journalist or reporter character. Bloggers also accepted.
Wild Hunger by Charlotte Lamb; contemporary romance, 1 star, dude is a war correspondent. It's 80's in all the worst ways, but written in the mid-90's, so I'm less inclined to forgive its foibles.

Complete April 17 Birdman: Read a romance with an actor or actress.
Bachelor In Paradise by Elizabeth Oldfield; contemporary romance, 3 stars. Dude is an actor, the lady is a biographer/historian

Complete June 18 12 Years a Slave: Read a historical romance by a Black author.
An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole; 3 stars, but I'm rounding up a bit. I wanted to love this, but I think Alyssa Cole's voice is maybe too modern? I liked A Princess in Theory way more, probably for that reason.

Complete April 15 Argo: Read a book that's been adapted into some other form of media.
Home Song by LaVyrle Spencer, contemporary family fiction, 3 stars, movie was released in 1996,

Complete June 16 The Artist: Read a book set between 1895 - 1936 (the Silent Film era).
A Touch of Flame by Jo Goodman, historical western romance, set in 1898, 4 stars

Complete May 14 The King's Speech: Read a romance with a royal character.
The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert. Own-voices with a black lead woman, fake engagement, prince of a fake place, very explicitly sexy with some light BDSM element (dominance only, no whips and chains), 4 stars

Complete April 8 The Hurt Locker: Read a romance with a soldier.
Web of Love by Mary Balogh; historical romance, main dude is a soldier, it's set half in Brussels around the Battle of Waterloo, 4 stars

Complete April 14 Slumdog Millionaire: Read a contemporary romance set outside of the U.S.
The Spanish Connection by Kay Thorpe; set in Spain, 1 star for a super-douchey "hero"

Complete June 3 No Country for Old Men: Read a contemporary western romance.
No Quarter Asked by Janet Dailey, set on a Texas ranch, 3 stars

Complete April 4 The Departed: Read a romantic suspense or a romance set in Massachusetts.
Fair Game by Patricia Briggs; paranormal romance/urban fantasy crossover, set in Boston, 4.5 stars

Complete June 4 Crash: Read a romance set in California.
Home for Love by Ellen James, set in San Francisco, 2 stars

Complete Jun 13 Million Dollar Baby: Read a romance with a female athlete.
Fire on the Ice by Tamsen Parker; f/f contemporary erotic romance, 3.5 stars. Both women are Olympics-analog level athletes (one speed skater, one figure skater), my review here

Complete April 24 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King: Read a fantasy novel.
Cast in Chaos by Michelle Sagara. I'm finding this series a little too metaphysical for my tastes. 3.5 stars, my review here

Frozen by Meljean Brook How to Blow It with a Billionaire (Arden St. Ives, #2) by Alexis Hall Wild Hunger by Charlotte Lamb Bachelor In Paradise (Harlequin Presents, No 964) by Elizabeth Oldfield An Extraordinary Union (The Loyal League #1) by Alyssa Cole Home Song by LaVyrle Spencer A Touch of Flame (The Cowboys of Colorado, #2) by Jo Goodman The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert Web of Love (Web, #2) by Mary Balogh The Spanish Connection by Kay Thorpe No Quarter Asked (Cord & Stacy #1) by Janet Dailey Fair Game (Alpha & Omega, #3) by Patricia Briggs Home for Love by Ellen James Fire on the Ice (Snow & Ice Games, #4) by Tamsen Parker Cast in Chaos (Chronicles of Elantra, #6) by Michelle Sagara

Koozebane | 67 comments Hmm, been meaning to read Terri Favro's ONCE UPON A TIME IN WEST TORONTO for a while, but wondering if it fits the "romance" part of "contemporary Western romance." The blurb mentions "sexual obsession and longing" and a plotline involving a proxy bride who runs off with her intended's son, but there are several other stories interwoven, it seems...

Silent Song by Ren Benton

12 Years a Slave: Read a historical romance by a Black author.
Winds of the Storm by Beverly Jenkins, Reconstruction-era New Orleans, old-skool-feeling with its sexual situations (virgin plays at being the mistress of a brothel) that distracted me from all the cool spy goings-on, 6/8.

Sandy D. | 44 comments Cool challenge! 15/15 read

The Shape of Water: Read a paranormal romance. How To Marry A Werewolf (Claw & Courtship, #1) by Gail Carriger How To Marry A Werewolf, by Gail Carriger, ★★★★ read 5/23; Major Channing (a minor but intriguingly unlikable character in Parasol Protectorate books) meets an American debutante in disgrace. Enjoyable.

Moonlight: Read a queer romance. PsyCop Briefs Volume 1 by Jordan Castillo Price
PsyCop Briefs: Volume 1, by Jordan Castillo Price, ★★★★ read 4/18; best for those who have already read some or all of PsyCop series, this selection of short stories develops main characters' romance a bit more.

Spotlight: Read a romance with a journalist or reporter character. Bloggers also accepted. The Coincidence of Coconut Cake by Amy E. Reichert
The Coincidence of Coconut Cake, by Amy E. Reichert, ★★★ 1/2 read 4/20; predictable romance between a food critic and a chef, but lovely setting (in Milwaukee!) and food descriptions.

Birdman: Read a romance with an actor or actress. Acting on Impulse (Love on Cue, #1) by Mia Sosa
Acting on Impulse, by Mia Sosa ★★★read 4/28. Actor in disguise meets athletic trainer on plane to Aruba. Best part of story for me was description of heroine's Puerto Rican food.

12 Years a Slave: Read a historical romance by a Black author. Let Us Dream by Alyssa Cole
Let Us Dream, by Alyssa Cole ★★★★ read 4/19. Black caberet/brothel owner hires Muslim immigrant as a dishwasher then a chef in the year leading up to women's suffrage vote.

Argo: Read a book that's been adapted into some other form of media. (A note on Goodreads states "Film rights to Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows have been acquired by Scott Free Productions and Film Four in the UK"...could be a good movie!) Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows, by Balli Kaur Jaswal, ★★★★ read 5/30; a bit of romance, bits of erotica, a bit of mystery, and lots of exploration of differences between first and second generation Sikh immigrants in London.

The Artist: Read a book set between 1895 - 1936 (the Silent Film era). So at the beginning of June I started Harmony Harmony by Sienna Mynx , by Sienna Mynx - it's a romance but I *hated* the mobster alpha hero so much I didn't finish it. It didn't help that the setting was a lot like that described in one part of Homegoing Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi (by Yaa Gyasi, which I read earlier this year) - but handled so differently. So anyway I started One Summer: America, 1927 One Summer America, 1927 by Bill Bryson by Bill Bryson and it was ★★★★ and fascinating but completely lacking in romance. Just finished 6/24.

The King's Speech: Read a romance with a royal character. The Swedish Prince by Karina Halle
The Swedish Prince, by Karina Halle. Finished 4/4, ★★★1/2. A little too damsel in distress for me, but still fun story.

The Hurt Locker: Read a romance with a soldier. Deadly Strain (Biological Response Team, #1) by Julie Rowe Deadly Strain, by Julie Rowe, ★★★1/2 read 5/24. Improbable romance/sexytimes but good thriller about a couple Americans (both in military) in Afghanistan and the threat of bioterrorism.

Slumdog Millionaire: Read a contemporary romance set outside of the U.S. Wanna Bet? (Dirty British Romance, #2) by Talia Hibbert Wanna Bet?, by Talia Hibbert, ★★★★ read 4/24; lovely friends to lovers story set in UK. Hibbert's characters are just *real* in a way I like so much.

No Country for Old Men: Read a contemporary western romance. Tougher in Texas (Texas Rodeo #3) by Kari Lynn Dell
Tougher in Texas, by Kari Lynn Dell, finished 4/1; ★★★★ set in rodeo business and fascinating. I'm totally hooked on this series now.

The Departed: Read a romantic suspense or a romance set in Massachusetts. Flat-Out Love (Flat-Out Love, #1) by Jessica Park Flat-Out Love, by Jessica Park, ★★★★ finished 5/28. New adult romance - college freshman in Boston moves into a dysfunctional family friend's house, bonds with emotionally fragile 13 y.o. daughter and older college-aged brother. Big secret can be figured out pretty early in book but I still enjoyed how it played out.

Crash: Read a romance set in California. Wild (Wild, #1) by Jill Sorenson
Wild, by Jill Sorenson, finished 4/3; ★★★★ set in San Diego Zoo in the aftermath of horrific earthquake.

Million Dollar Baby: Read a romance with a female athlete. Waking Olivia by Elizabeth O'Roark
Waking Olivia, by Elizabeth O'Roark, ★★★★ read 4/19; female track star at small college with traumatic past & some serious issues falls in love with her coach.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King: Read a fantasy novel. Fantasy romance accepted! Wraith by Helen Harper
Wraith, by Helen Harper, ★★★★ read 4/23; Stirling, Scotland, occupied by goblins, humans, a visiting dark elf, and a wraith who can separate her shadow from her body. Only thing I didn't like was the instant "soul bond" trope - though it was handled humorously, at least.

Sabrina West | 52 comments Congrats, Jae, Anne Boleyn's Ghost, Laure, and everyone else who finished!

My favorite book was The Magpie Lord. I can't believe it took me that long to read it, but now I'm devouring all her other books.

I do have a small rant. The book that frustrated me the most was The Hero by Samantha Young. It has one of those moments I see so often in romance, where the hero treats the heroine like crap because of his Manly Angst and Tragic Past. She's all fed up and about to leave, and someone says no! Only you understand him! Only your love can save him! So the heroine stays, and the hero keeps treating her like crap.

Now, there is often some grovelling at the end, and the hero may or may not redeem himself well enough for me. But what I can't get over is that third party urging the heroine to stay in a relationship with someone who is causing her so much emotional pain. Ugh. I think I'm losing patience with the myth of the tortured genius whose tantrums are always excused.

message 38: by Critterbee❇ (new)

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 248 comments Congrats Jae and Sabrina!

Sabrina - I agree about the 'tortured hero who gets to treat the heroine horribly' crap! This just encourages women to stay with men who treat them horribly, with the idea that it is their responsibility to cure / rescue / save the cad. Hot tip - most of the time, men do not change, and will continue or revert to that treatment.

message 39: by Jae (new)

Jae | 127 comments Way to go Sabrina!

I agree with you and Critterbee about "tortured" heroes. Especially since a lot of the time, they don't actually change their behavior, at least in the book. Like, sorry you have mommy issues or whatever, but that's not a reason to be a douche wagon,

I will admit to being more forgiving of this trope in older Harlequin Presents (which I love like woah) but in more recently published stuff, it's super uncool.

message 40: by Sandy (last edited Jun 28, 2018 09:09AM) (new)

Sandy D. | 44 comments Finally wrapped up this challenge last weekend. I couldn't find a romance set in Silent Film era that I liked (see above), ended up reading a non-fiction book that's been on "to read" list for a couple of years - One Summer: America, 1927, by Bill Bryson. Lots of interesting stuff about Charles Lindbergh (good lord, did you know he had children by three other women apart from wife Anne Morrow Lindbergh secretly in Germany?), Babe Ruth (and I hate baseball), Warren G. Harding (he had mistress & illegitimate daughter too), Calvin Coolidge, eugenics, Saaco & Vanzetti (still not sure if they were guilty), Al Capone, Prohibition, radio & invention of tv, movies, and lots more.

I am definitely in a spot where I don't want to read about millionaire asshole "heros" or anti-heroes - especially ones that shoot people and coerce/assault heroines in any way (see here)!

EFE | 8 comments Finished. Loved the idea of this challenge and it really made me think trying to find the Massachusetts books especially.

Shape of Water: HexBound, Bec McMaster (A steampunk magical world). 5/5. It's definitely the middle of a trilogy but I really enjoyed it, good writing and good world-building.
Moonlight: The Laurence Brown Affair, Cat Sebastian. 5/5. Loved it, liked how both characters ended up complementing each other. Will definitely read more.
Spotlight: Almost Always, Christie Ridgway, 3/5. Ok, not particularly memorable but nice while I was reading it.
Birdman: Spice and Secrets, Suleikha Snyder. Loved it. Loved the characters, the writing, the descriptions. Only wished it was a bit longer so I could spend more time with the characters! 5/5
12 Years A slave. Kind of read two for this one, An Extraordinary Union, Alyssa Cole (5/5) and Forbidden, Beverly Jenkins (4/5). My first introduction to both Cole and Jenkins and I really liked both books, loved the characters and more importantly the stories and the histories that both writers are telling. Will definitely read more by both. I just took a little while to get into Jenkins' voice but very much enjoyed it.
Argo: The Truth About Love, Julie James, James announced during the challenge that the book is being adapted for a mini-series. 5/5. A very 'grown-up' romance in that the drama/ conflict is just about people working out and readjusting their lives, careers and priorities and also just being good at their jobs. I also loved how the initial 'enemies to lovers' bit was handled.
The Artist - The Solemn Bell, Allison Jeleyne. 4/5. Set in 1926. Interesting and unusual, not a glamorous book, just about two people dealing with their own tragedies. A surprising ending but I enjoyed it.
King's Speech: A Princess in Theory, Alyssa Cole. 4/5. Really enjoyed it. I love Cole's writing and the characters she creates. Some of it happened a bit fast but I loved Naledi's competence and the supporting characters were great. Can't wait for the next one.
Hurt Locker: A Seal's Oath, Cora Seton. 3/5. A bit implausible and a bit too much sequel bait but nice enough.
Slumdog Millionaire, Spice and Smoke. 5/5. Read all three of Snyder's Bollywood books for these two challenges and loved them.
No Country for Old Men - Chance for Love, Anne B Harrison. 3/5. Can't really remember much about it so it must have been ok.
Departed- Undercover Attraction, Katee Robert. 4/5. I'm not a huge fan of criminal heroes (a bit of an oxymoron for me) and I wasn't too sure if the relationship could last beyond the end of the book and it was very obviously the middle of a series but despite all this, I really enjoyed the writing style, the plot and the characterisation.
Crash - The Wedding Date, Jasmine Guillory. 5/5. Really liked it. It lived up to the rave reviews I've seen of it. I also really liked reading about adults being adult about their lives and relationships.
Million Dollar Baby: Again, I read two for this, Back to Me, Lindsay Paige (2/5) and Shining through, Elizabeth Harmon (4/5). Back to me was disappointing since I din't like the main character, I thought the situations were contrived and too predictable and I didn't like the fact that it was all founded on the idea of tennis star faced with losing her career comes back to the one that got away because she's got nothing else and he's ok with being 'well, I've got nothing else better going on' and then everything magically falls into place for her. Shining Through was better. I liked the sense of struggle, of just how hard it is to be a professional athlete and especially to be the one that everyone else has got to beat but I felt like that might have overshadowed the romance a little bit but definitely an enjoyable book and an enjoyable author.
Lord of the Rings: Again, two books for this one: Libriomancer, Jim C Hines and Promise of Fire, Amanda Bouchet. Both 5/5. Loved both of them. Good world-building, compelling writing and good characters. Will be reading more of both authors.
Congrats to everyone else.

Anne Boleyn's Ghost | 23 comments Congrats to all who have finished! Does anyone know if another quarterly challenge is coming? Sorry if this was announced elsewhere and I missed it 🙈

EFE, you mentioned that you want to read more Cat Sebastian and I can confirm that would be a most excellent idea 😉 The third book in that series is my favorite!
