Anne Pope | 2 comments Probably published 1980-1987. A young girl growing up in poverty in the 1940s. She and her father are abandoned by the mother and they live in a barn. The little girl is ostracized at school, but is invited to another little girl's birthday party. She treasures the invitation so much (it looks like a clown) that she sleeps with it until the day of the party. She has a wonderful time and the two little girls soon become friends. The second little girl might be named Violet. Soon Violet's family falls on hard times too and the two friends become closer.

Anne, why does the mother leave her family, and does she leave with someone?

What's her father's job or skills/interests?

What's the location (country, region)?

Anne Pope | 2 comments Kris, the mother leaves for greener pastures. I think she's a na'er do well. Don't think she leaves with anyone specific. Father is unemployed. I believe late in the book he decides to enlist in the Army to enter WWII. I believe late in the book, the main character's friend becomes ill perhaps with polio? Not sure of the geographic region of this book, but might be northeast America.
