Jordan (jordanrogers18) I read this book in the 90s. So it's at least that old, not sure if it was older.
Some man in the book was either sick or hurt himself that preventing him from doing work. So the zoo animals had to take over. I remember specifically an animal being a dentist, and animal delivering mail and there was definitely a giraffe in the book. At the end or beginning I remember all the animals and the man went bird watching or hiking. I have been looking for this book for years because it was my favourite as a kid.

Jordan (jordanrogers18) The pictures were very colourful but soft looking. Not stumper bright.

Jordan (jordanrogers18) Some other animal was a mail man I think.

A Sick Day for Amos McGee by Philip C. Stead turned up while searching, but it was published in 2010. Perhaps it will lead to related books.

Adele | 1208 comments Is it The Day the Animals Left the Zoo by Donata Delulio? I couldn't find it on goodreads, but you can see the cover here: https://www.amazon.com/day-animals-le...

The description on worldcat is "Tired of living in the zoo, the animals leave to find jobs in the outside world."

This appears to be a Canadian book. Worldcat.org lists the publisher as "Winnipeg : Manitoba Education and Training, 1992". (Sometimes Worldcat doesn't list the earliest publication.) http://www.worldcat.org/title/day-the...

Adele | 1208 comments I hadn't noticed that, Kris, but now I see that Jordan's listed location is in Ontario, Canada. That's promising! :-)

Jordan (jordanrogers18) Thank you! I can't find any pictures of the inside so I am not 100% sure but it sounds so familiar. I think it might be it. I am going to a children's bookstore this week to see if they know it!

Adele | 1208 comments Good luck! I did find the book on ebay with pictures of a couple interior pages: https://www.ebay.com/itm/THE-DAY-THE-...

I noticed the text says the animals want to get jobs and they are friendly with and like the zookeeper.

Jordan (jordanrogers18) I'm pretty sure that's it! Thank you so much. That's great. I have looked for this book for months
