every morning had been a routine: wake up at 4:30, take a shower, do her hair and makeup, put on her clothes, grab her book bag and an apple for breakfast, then run to the bus stop. it was continuous, a pattern she's been repeating since freshman year. her family couldn't afford a school bus transportation, so kennedy relied on the public bus to get her to school.

she was just about to miss the bus this particular morning, and was panting as she climbed up the steps, cashing in the few cents it cost, then looking for a seat.

"you're an asshole!" the naked girl shrieked, reaching down to pick up her high heel. she threw her arm back, hurling the shoe at jackson. he dodged it easily, looking at her with a bored expression. she continued to scream at him, grabbing her clothes from the floor. "to think, you'd at least have the decency to wake me up, rather than try to leave!"

"i would've rather let you continue to drool, thank you very much," jackson responded simply, reaching into his back pocket for a cigarette. he grabbed his lighter from his other pocket, and lit the cigarette, plucking it in between his lips. "bye." with that, he turned around and walked out of the door, making his way out of the random apartment that he was in.

a husky voice alarmed her for a split second, and she turned her head to look at a man, a seat next to him. not answering him right away, kennedy looked up again and concluded that every seat on the bus was taken. a small, respectful smile graced her lips as she lowered herself into the seat. "thank you," she muttered, peering up at the man again, then looking down at her hands.

plucking the cigarette from his lips, he held it in between his pointer finger and middle finger, peering down at the girl. small, blonde, and younger than him. hesitant, surprised, and innocent. jackson gathered all of these details by looking at her, then pushed them to the back of his thoughts. he shrugged nonchalantly, and answered simply, "just a bad wake up call."

taking his whisper as a bad sign, kennedy scooted ever so slightly away from him. she looked up at him, pursing her lips. he was attractive--she'd give him that--but his demeanor made her uncomfortable. "just going to school," she told him, her gaze flickering to her book bag.

he put the cigarette back into his lips, taking a long drag as she walked off. seeing as he had to exit the complex as well, he followed behind her, making sure to keep a distance. as he went down, jackson thought over the list of things he had to do today, and came to the conclusion that he actually had nothing planned. he supposed he'd call jayden and see if his friend had anything to do.

his reply had confirmed her suspicions that he was older than her and obviously out of school. kennedy took his phone call as a chance to grab something to distract her with. she turned around, opening her book bag. the first thing she saw was her can of pepper spray, but she continued to rummage through the bag until she grabbed her book. kennedy closed her book bag and laid the book on her lap, flipping to the page held by her bookmark.

jackson took his cigarette out of his mouth again, then threw it on the ground, stomping on it with his foot. he was about to say something to jayden when the girl had tripped over. jackson took a moment to stare at her, considering what to do, then finally decided to help her. "i'll call you back in a minute," he said into the phone, then hung up. he stepped over to the girl, crouching down and picking up her school supplies. "you hurt?"

when kennedy had been in middle school, she had taken a liking to singing, and had joined her school's chorus. her teacher had taught her students how to breathe if they were to ever encounter cigarette smoke. she looked away from her book to eye the cigarette in his fingers, then looked back down at her book, working on her diaphragmatic breathing.

he remained calm while the girl stressed out over her minor accident. when she left, he only watched her go, then raked a hand through his hair. he began to walk slowly towards the parking lot, where his truck was. jackson climbed inside his truck, turning it on and backing out of his parking spot. about to drive away, he noticed that the girl was walking, and didn't look happy to be doing so.

with a grunt, jackson drove over to her and rolled down his window. "do you need a ride? i promise to be careful, but it's fine if you don't trust me," he asked her, raising an eyebrow.

Without looking up at him, Kennedy nods in response, and adds for good measure, "The driver might kick you out if he catches you. It's illegal to smoke in tight spaces like this." She felt a bit proud of herself from bringing that up, though a part of her suspected that he wouldn't care about what she said. Kennedy continued to read her book and work on her breathing to block out the smoke.

Jackson Park
"Positive," he told her simply, his eyes following her as she climbed in. He waited until she was strapped in and settled to begin driving again. Jackson nodded at her instructions. He'd attended HSC for a few months in the tenth grade, until he was expelled for getting into a fight. He was positive that he wasn't allowed in the parking lot along with his expulsion, but he wasn't going to dump the girl outside of the school when she was already late.

"Do you need a ride after school as well?" He surprisingly asked, looking at her for a second, then looking away.
