I read the beginning of the book in a U.S. bookstore in 2012 or 2013 and have been looking for it ever since

It is very tongue in cheek with the protagonist thinking everything is fine or having a completely wrong perception of everything going on in her life. There was something about taking a vacation maybe by the water.
