Sofia and I will be reading and discussing Long Division by Kiese Laymon in this thread.

Feel free to read along and join the discussion!

PS Thanks Lulu!

The only thing I’ve ever read by Kiese Laymon’s before this is his essay How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America which I loved and I’m glad to finally be able to read Long Division!

I’m on chapter 3 at the moment. Some initial thoughts: The writing style and satire reminds of The Sellout by Paul Beatty (I think I prefer Kiese Laymon’s style). I had no idea that this book was so funny, there are some real laugh out loud moments (the Uncle Relle bit, the section in the Principal’s office, “Ms Kanye” (!) )

This is my first title by the author. I haven’t had a chance to read The Sellout yet.

I do feel there will be a lot of laugh out loud moments. Lol

I’m halfway through. It’s pretty funny. Not exactly sure where it’s going though.

PS Same Lulu, I have literally no idea where this is going. I’m really enjoying the writing though!

PS I’m so sorry - I completely forgot to get back to this thread. I actually DNFd this one – I just couldn’t get into it, which is a shame because I really really enjoy Laymon’s essays. Did you enjoy it?

I’m ready to start American Street — I skimmed through a couple of chapters earlier today and it looks really great. Would you be up for that now or later this month or next month? I’m flexible :)

I wasn’t a fan of this one either. It was ok. I read American Street and really enjoyed it. We can discuss whenever you’re ready.

PS Ok great, I’ll and finish it by next week. Yeah, the premise was great but it didn’t work for me.
