Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread where we could put up news from the world of books.

Author news, book news, or anything from their world that catches your fancy goes here.

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Did we ever talk about this? http://ayearofreadingtheworld.com/the...

What do you think of the idea?

Em*bedded-in-books* (embeddedinbooks) | 2936 comments Nice list. Want to go through and glean out a few for my TBR.

message 14: by Srividya (new)

Srividya (theinkedmermaid) @Sumit - Lovely idea. I have seen challenges in other groups as well but limited to a particular geographical area. May be we could introduce one - where the reader gets to set the pace, for a maximum of up to 5 years, where he/she can read all or simply choose etc.. What do you think?

message 15: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Was thinking of it, Sri. Lemme set it up soon. :)

2-3?

out of 21, I think there are 16 books that I've never heard of before.

message 26: by Ishi (new)

Ishi Bhanot | 14745 comments Not sure about a particular book..either 3 in tbr, or 4. And read 2. :)

Ditto. Many books I haven't heard of before.

Em*bedded-in-books* (embeddedinbooks) | 2936 comments 4 in my to read and 4 in my already read list.

message 28: by Srividya (new)

Srividya (theinkedmermaid) Not bad.. I have read 7 of those books, 3 are in my TBR, 1 I definitely don't want to read and the others I don't mind adding! :)

Em*bedded-in-books* (embeddedinbooks) | 2936 comments Read already:
Dracula
Exorcist
Handmaid's tale [never knew it was horror, it's more like dystopia]
The Silence of the Lambs
Lord of the flies
1984

Abandoned
The woman in black
Screw tape letters [very very boring, at least to me]
Let us talk about Kevin [gruesome and scary, in a psychological way]

Not even a single book by Stephen King, the King of Horrors !

Em*bedded-in-books* (embeddedinbooks) | 2936 comments DISCLAIMER - I hate Horror genre, but somehow happen to read such books.

message 32: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) He is there on number 1 with IT.;)

So any book made it tk your tbr?

Em*bedded-in-books* (embeddedinbooks) | 2936 comments Oh, yes... sort of slipped out of my mind.
Many are already there.
It
American Psycho
House of Leaves
Haunting of Hill House
Amityville horror
Heart shaped box
We need to talk about Kevin (someday when my son is in his thirties, so I have to wait another couple decades)
The girl next door
The painted bird
Let the right one in
In cold blood
Swan song

message 34: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) Let the right one in and Swan song are on my tbr. Am reading them in October celebrating the month of Halloween.;)

Why wait for Gautham to read Kevin?

& do you know you are horror fan?;):P

message 35: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Had seen the list earlier and well...and even though I don't agree with some elements, it's still a very good list. (For example, I'd rate 'The Shining' as way more scary than 'It')

The one's I've read are:
IT
American Psycho
Dracula
The Silence of the Lambs
The Amityville Horror (I thought this was ridiculously bad!)
The Trial
Heart-shaped Box
We need to talk about Kevin (not conventional horror, but horrifying nevertheless)
The Girl Next Door
The Wasp Factory
Lord of the Flies
Let the Right One In
The Collector
1984

However, many of these are deeply disturbing books without being conventional 'horror'. The ones more terrifying are where everyday situations/lives turn horrific with some small twists of a deep, sharp knife.

Looking forward to reading some others, but I'm not convinced this is the all-time best list of horror. The all-time best would surely have a few more books from King, maybe a couple from Clive Barker, and possibly more Japanese influence (Koji Suzuki, and more from Ryu Murakami).

Em*bedded-in-books* (embeddedinbooks) | 2936 comments Manju, its about a school shootout by a boy, who is gunned down, narrated by his bereft mother who's ostracized by the society. I feel panicky when I read it.
I will keep a keen eye on your current reads and join in for those horrors, if possible.

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) In another big win for ebook readers, Amazon has launched its Kindle Unlimited service in India. Even better news - it's at Indian prices!

For 99/- a month, you can use the service on your Kindle apps or devices. Great, isn't it?

Phani Raj (phaniraj) | 8 comments Unfortunately, most of the books I am interested are not available under Kindle Unlimited :( Gonna wait for some more time before subscribing

message 41: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Phani wrote: "Unfortunately, most of the books I am interested are not available under Kindle Unlimited :( Gonna wait for some more time before subscribing"

Many books will not be available because Amazon does not have a tie-up with many publishing houses for Unlimited. Therefore, it is going to be a good option only if you'll be reading 3-5 books from the existing catalogue each month.
