Lily (joy1) | 191 comments When I entered "J" as a book name (add book/author feature), I was unsuccessful in finding the book by Howard Jacobson that was named to the Man Booker Long List this morning.

It was also not on this list for Howard Jacobson:

("Us" by David Nicholls I was also unable to find using the "add book/author" feature, but I did find the book here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...)

Z-squared | 8580 comments The search feature is not always intuitive. I don't know why the book wouldn't come up for you, but it's definitely here and linked to the author's profile:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

It's also on page 2 of the search results:

Thank you, Z[2]! (I must not have checked the entire listing for Jacobson, although I thought I did. Mea culpa!)

I still don't know how to get an image or listing for either "Us" or "J" from the add book/author feature, but at least I can point people to the page for each book.

Given that each book seems already to have a designation, I suspect one should be able to retrieve a Goodreads generated list of the 2014 Longlist, but I don't know how to do that -- and therefore don't know how to tell others. Suggestions?

JenniferD (booktrovert) | 65 comments fwiw - with titles like that, or titles that may be used by more than one author, i tend to enter both the title and the author's name in the search box. that usually produces the right book for me.

so if you enter: "j howard jacobson" you will get two results - catch 22 (!!) and then jacobson's book is the second book.

the search engine is definitely a huge frustration for many on the site.

Not a clue, sorry. You might try starting a new thread with that question, as librarians tend to ignore threads like this one that appear done.

That sometimes works on search, but "add book" seems hopeless at times for me. Hmm, but it did work for me today! Usually I get no such book, but will now keep trying in the future!

Thanks for your response, Jennifer.

Thx, Z [2] -- I decided to take the question to a Goodreads feedback thread.

hi lily! oh, surprising to hear it hasn't worked for you in the past. i use it that way for the "add book/author" function because i have had so many issues with that feature, as well as the search feature bringing up what i am actually looking for. it's such a strange system...and not just a little frustrating. with hope it moves up the priority list because a well functioning search seems, to me, rather important to a site like this. heh!!

anyway...i hope trying to "add" using title and author will work more often for you than not.

:)

the only work around i can figure is if you go into one of the nominated books, so J, for example...there is then the 'literary awards' space where "Man Booker Prize Nominee for Longlist (2014)" is showing. if you click on that...it takes you to the full list of winners and nominees. 2014 starts on page two: https://www.goodreads.com/award/show/...

so it's not very elegant...but it gets you there.
