SOLVED. Three children live with their father. The eldest boy doesn't speak. [s]

I remember most of the beginning vividly. The cover of the book had three children displayed, one specifically was a tall boy with dusty blonde hair and had his coat collar covering his mouth, I can not remember much about the other two other than gender and age relation to the eldest boy (the girl is the middle child and the second boy is the youngest of the three). The three children live with their father, I feel like he had a special job and was not around the children much. The most significant detail about one of the characters was that the eldest boy did not speak, or refused to. The girl (or middle child) always was very vocal about her mother and constantly asked where she had gone off to. I feel like the father would tell wild stories about the mother about adventures she'd been on. One very specific detail I remember is that the girl begged her father for this painting he had of a young prince (who may or may not have had a monkey) she had it placed above her bed and she would talk to it every night because she was drawn strongly towards the boy in the painting. eventually of course the children set off to find answers. I do remember bits of the ending, but to refrain from spoiling I will keep it out. I hope that is enough information. Thank you in advance.
