He criticised students who 'hissed his mystery lectures' and said they should leave 'by the town drain', referring to the down train (the train to London).
Two that come to mind from memory...'I was sewn to this sheet' ('I was shown to this seat') and 'You'll be leaving Oxford by the town drain' ('down train' ...to a student of his).

Spooner, who died on August 29, 1930, was an Anglican priest and scholar. He studied at New College, Oxford, before lecturing there for 60 years, in history, philosophy and divinity.
