Jen wrote: "Great review. I hope to read this soon"Jen, I think you will be a person who is more annoyed by the coincidences than I was. I think you will still like the book, but I can see your review calling out that aspect.
Jen wrote: "Yes probably but I can suspend that when forewarned"Good! Then get to reading it!
Also, I listened to it on audio and it was very well done.
I haven’t read the above as I’m still listening to it and have a long way to go, but I am really enjoying it so far. I was so happy to go back to work today so I could start it back up again after the disruption of the school holidays.

I finished this book about 24 hours ago and I am still crying. I loved every single word on every single page. I loved the characters, I loved the underlying themes, I loved....well, I think you get my general reaction.
The book synopsis for this was frustratingly vague. I truly had no idea what I was getting into, which can sometimes cause me some agita. But, in a nutshell, this story follows Cyril, who we follow through his life by visiting him every 7 years. The primary theme is Cyril struggling with his sexuality, with being gay in Ireland in the 50s, 60s, and beyond. We meet a whole cast of characters, many of them who make appearances in large and small parts throughout the decades.
I adored Cyril. My heart broke for him, I was angry with him, I was happy for him, I was proud of him. He felt like such a genuine character who dealt with very realistic situations, which makes total sense given that I have heard this is very much based on the author's own experiences as a gay man in Ireland (though Boyne is younger than our main character).
Some people may read this and will complain that there were too many completely unbelievable coincidences. People who end up in the same place at the same time, or situations that required too many stars to align. But for me, that was part of the beauty of the story. The point that we are all interconnected and sometimes our lives change drastically at the whim of the universe.
This will definitely be one of my Top 10 books of the year. I am calling it early in January of 2018, but I cannot see myself loving 10 books more than I loved this. These characters will stay with me for a long time.
