Devastating News (Updated 24 feb!)

As a suggestion for February, we could use the same list we have for January, but send to the person listed before you. So we would basically be sending back to the person who sent to us in January.

Dear Rift -- Sending hugs, first of all, for you and your partner and your partner's mum. I can't imagine such a catastrophe, and I admire your composure and concern for this exchange, too, amidst such a soul-crunching crisis. All of us who have benefitted from your wonderful project will be waiting, fingers crossed, for good news about the recovery.
Meanwhile, practical next steps for the group:
Tia's idea is a good one for February, March, and April.
Most of us likely still have January's email (either here in GR mail or the personal email box; I get both every month). We can send postcards to the other three names on those lists, one per month. I like Tia's idea to respond to the name above ours (the person who sent us a postcard this month) for February. After that, we can write to the other two folks in any order we fancy for March and April.
Anyone who didn't keep the January list can send a postcard to Rift, who surely deserves a lovely avalanche of happy mail!
As for newcomers: They can join a waitlist. No need for them to send an address until the wait's over.
Dear Rift, that means all you need do is post whatever topics you wish ... and let us know how we can help, as you iron out all the wrinkles. We are MANY and our combined assistance could be just the ticket.

Good luck in getting your data fixed! The loss of your photos and other files is truly awful. And your partner's mom's ill health on top of everything else just as to the difficulty. I'll be sending good thoughts and virtual hugs your way.
Lisa
PS: I like the idea of just sending to the other people in our list in any order we choose. I'd also be really interested in learning about/doing LetterMo. But please don't worry about this if you already have too much on your plate!

I am with Tia Marie and bardbooks regarding the next couple months. That way we can continue to do what you and us obviously love and you have a few months of breathing room.
Take the time you need for you and your family. None of us our going anywhere and we'll all keep you in our thoughts!
Marla

So sorry to hear about this. It's happened to me in the past (horrible experience) and I just had to start some things over again. For photos I asked around family and friends in case they had copies and I managed to retrieve a surprising number.
Let's go with Tia Marie's idea.
fingers crossed that they can retrieve data for you and everything else is better for you in 2018.

Oh that is just awful, Rift! I am so so sorry that happened and that your partner is having a family emergency too. Please do whatever it is you need to do for yourself and we'll be here to start back up again when you're ready!

Sorry to hear about your partner's mom. It must be very stressful to be across the country, especially at a time like this. Hope she has a quick and comfortable recovery.
Losing data is, as you said, devastating. I hope everything is recovered with minimal effort.
I like the idea of sending a postcard to the person above us in your January message. I'm also fine if I don't receive a one because someone doesn't or can't participate in Feb or upcoming months.
If you have other suggestions, please share them. I'd love to help in any way I can :)
Take care,
Kandice

I'm so sorry to hear what's happened. I hope the file recovery will be successful - the same thing happened to me some years back and it was so stressful, but eventually I just started anew.
I do hope you manage to retrieve your files though and that your partner's mom will feel better soon as well... Please keep us posted! Sending lots of positive vibes your way.
As for the next months, I agree with TiaMarie !

I am so sorry to hear about your computer situation. In today’s world where we accumulate all our work and memories on the laptop, I can only imagine how helpless and sad you feel. ~hugs~
I hope you’re able to recover most of your data. And I’m sure we shall figure out a way to exchange postcards for the forthcoming months.
Best wishes,
Shekhar

Well, take good care of yourselves and don't fret a sniggle about this group. In the midst of the mess, enjoy the postcards that come to you this month!
I like Tia's idea, and see that there's a February post up, so I'm headed there to check out the plan.
Holding you and yours in my prayers today!
MJ

I hope you get everything recovered and your in-law mends up quickly! With this news in light, i'll pull out some old addresses so people get mail. :)
Sending best wishes!!

I wish you and your family will be bless by GOD.

Keeping you and your partner and your partner's mom in the light with love streaming to you every moment. Your beautiful postcard photographs are situated at various places within easy eye view to keep you in my thoughts and in my heart.
Much love, dear friend,
Sandy

Good luck !
Dear Beautiful Readers,
Thank You So Very Much! Your support has meant the world to me and I am appreciative beyond words.
A couple of updates:
YAY! I got my files back yesterday!!! My PHOTOS!!! I am incredibly relieved, and I feel like I can get on with my life, again, even tho I have other computer challenges to overcome. (My printer is down again, and I'm trying to decide what to do about my crashed computer.)
My partner's mom: After spending over 2weeks in the hospital, she is now recovering in a nursing home type facility. Hopefully this will be a temporary thing, and she'll continue to recover to the point where she can go home. It sounds like all of her therapies are going well!
Group Information
* GR PC March... Yes! it's on! Look for the signup post around the 1st.
I did have a momentary scare when I realized the encrypted database I keep for this group was not self-extracting. I have plans to fix this problem, along with many other little things that I now know to do, in case I ever face this kind of crisis again.
* Since the printer is down again, I won't be able to send GR PC Feb postcards. (arg, I am really missing my mass mailings!!) I am looking into printing a few things at my day job, so I will be able to send out Welcome Postcards sometime next week. Apologies to the newbies!
* Please continue to be awesome! and patient. :D
Love and Hope,
rift

HUZZAH! So happy for you, Rift -- your photos! Your files! Sending more recovery wishes for your P's mother, too.

My computer had a cataclysmic crash yesterday. On top of that, my backup files have disappeared. Everything is gone: photos, postcards, files, my whole life. just gone.
I am looking into Data Recovery services. The web sites I've looked at have given me some hope. But I don't know how much time it will take or how successful it will be.
Even if I get some or most of my files back, there is still the issue of my old computer. I was running an old operating system on it because I need that for my printer, which is no longer supported in Win10. I don't know how that is going to play out.
Sidenote: my printer had died over a week ago, and the part I needed was shipped via "it will take forever and the tracking info is a joke". So I've not been able to print anything, anyway for a while.
(Yep, it's just one thing after another around here. In addition, my partner's mom, who lives on the other side of the country, is in the hospital and my partner took an emergency trip out there to be with her.)
What this means for our group
* I will not be able to send out my GR PC Jan postcards.
* I will not be able to host the GR PC February. I just can't do it without my software and the files. I am so sad about this, because Feb is an important month for mailing people... It's the Month of Letters. And our group has gotten so wonderfully big, I hate to disappoint so many people.
I am so sorry! I am totally open to any ideas. I would like to maybe post a signup for February... I just don't know what you'd be signing up for?! Individual postcard exchanges? A try at LetterMo and sending mail every day?
* GR PC March... ?? I won't know anything until after the Data Recovery process. I will keep you updated.
So. There it is. My own personal apocalypse. Hopefully everything will turn out okay. But regardless, I do hope to be able to keep the group going, it's so important to me!
Love and Hope,
rift
