BT's incompetence knows no bounds!
We have been remiss in not marking the death of Maggie Smith who has graced our screens and stages for so many decades. Too many performances to choose from but one of my favourites was her turn as Rod Taylor's secretary in The V.I.P.s. They also made Young Cassidy together and got on very well I believe.https://www.thetimes.com/uk/society/a...

And Kris Kristofferson - another of my favourites gone. I fell in love with his music in the very early 70s. A great songwriter and an amazing career - "a Golden Globe-winning actor, Golden Gloves boxer, Rhodes scholar, author, U.S. Army veteran, pilot, and onetime record-label janitor". I was lucky enough to see him here five years ago when he was still in top form.https://www.rollingstone.com/music/mu...

I always remember him comforting Sinead O Connor onstage.
He lived some life.
Vale Cissy Houston - possibly known in recent years as Whitney's mother but she was a fine singer in her own right.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yB8rL...

Mr Paul Di'Anno, passed at 66. Not Iron Maiden's best vocalist but undoubtedly the best vocalist for the time, 1978-1981, with some undeniable classics to his name. The band would not have been able to achieve the success they did if not for the groundwork done on these two classics; Iron Maiden and Killers.Rock in Peace
RIP Teri Garr. The talented actress best known for her comedy rôles passed away a day or so ago following a long battle with MS.
RIP Quincy Jones, Peerless Music Producer Behind ‘Thriller,’ Dead at 91https://www.rollingstone.com/music/mu...
Timothy West, aged 90.https://www.theguardian.com/stage/202...
He always came across as a lovely bloke. Poor Prunella Scales, what will she do without him? :-(

That's desperately sad, given Pru's dementia. Just hope she will get the loving care that Timothy gave her. RIP to a fine actor and, as you say, lovely bloke.
SussexWelsh wrote: "Pete Sinfield, co-founder and lyricist for King Crimson, aged 80.Another legend gone. :-("
Sad to hear. A man of great breadth. Everybody will know him for his work with Crim, but Pete would also go on to write hits for the likes of Leo Sayer, Five Star and Bucks Fizz. RIP.
SussexWelsh wrote: "I very nearly opted for the Manticore label and posted a track by him on your 441 thread Tim."That would have been cool, Sussex (for me anyway!). Maybe if people enjoyed the theme a second round could be had sometime in the future? Loads of scope still there.

John Prescott. Whatever his supposed shortcomings in certain areas and no matter whether one is a Labour supporter or not, it can't be denied that he was a political giant in comparison to the motley crew of lying pygmies currently occupying Downing Street.

I rewatched that instinctual punch he doled out today, it never loses its excellence.
Sam Moore, of Sam & Dave, of complications after surgery, aged 89.His one-time partner in the duo, Dave Prater, died in 1988 in a road accident.
Tony Slattery has passed at 65. Somewhat of a legend of my yoof tv and cursed, in subsequent years, by many more demons than most. Classic channel 4.
God damn David Lynch has gone at 78. A million film studies students will tell you he's responsible for the greatest movie ever made, Inland Empire, but I'll go with Dune and Wild at Heart and Twin Peaks and many more.
It's getting scary opening this thread these days. I just watched The Fabelmans (2022) last week in which he took the part of another director, John Ford. My favourites would include Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and The Straight Story as well as Twin Peaks, of course.
Eraserhead was my first Lynch film .... loved it. Can't say there's anything much he's done since that I haven't appreciated.
Farewell Denis Law, Manchester United and Scotland legend, aged 84.I live at 14 Stanhope Street,
Me mum, me dad and me,
And three of us have made a gang,
John Stokes and Trev and me.
Our favourite day is Saturday;
We go Old Trafford way
And wear red colours in our coats
To watch United play.
We always stand behind the goal
In the middle of the roar.
The others come to see the game -
I come for Denis Law.
His red sleeves flap around his wrists,
He’s built all thin and raw,
But the toughest backs don’t stand a chance
When the ball’s near Denis Law.
He’s a whiplash when he’s in control,
He can swivel like an eel,
And twist and sprint in such a way
It makes defences reel.
And when he’s hurtling for the goal
I know he’s got to score.
Defences may stop normal men -
They can’t stop Denis Law.
We all race home when full time blows
To kick a tennis ball,
And Trafford Park is our back-yard,
And the stand is next door’s wall.
Old Stokesey shouts, “I’m Jimmy Greaves,”
And scores against the door,
And Trev shouts: “I’ll be Charlton,” -
But I am Denis Law.

Christopher Benjamin, character actor, probably best known for his role as theatre owner Henry Gordon Jago in the Doctor Who classic 'The Talons Of Weng Chiang'. R.I.P. Rick Buckler. I always thought he was quite an under-rated drummer and sad to see he has passed away.
The radio was tuned to Radio 2 when I heard this sad news, so what did the idiot play, why 'That's Entertainment' of course, which barely features Rick's work. I suppose they consider 'Funeral Pyre' might frighten the horses.

I suppose they consider 'Funeral Pyre..."I always associate Funeral Pyre with Rick Buckler's drumming. Ironically on TikTok a couple of weeks ago was a Jam tribute band called Sound Affex, who covered this song. I had always held out for a reunion, but I don't think there was any love lost between him and Weller.
Must admit I found Weller's tribute, in which he waxed lyrical about the early days of the Jam, a bit hypocritical considering the way in which he shafted his two old friends by breaking the band up with no warning.

As much as I respect Paul Weller, that never sat right with me. Perhaps he didn't realise how much The Jam meant to the other band members. Or maybe he was just an arsehole who didn't give a stuff.
