Here's another vague memory...

The book is about a boy, young teens perhaps, whose father served in the Vietnam War. There is another child in the story who is the son of a GI (either the first boy's father or uncle?) who comes with his Vietnamese mother to live with the boy. I am also fairly certain that the Vietnam Memorial makes an appearance.

I cannot remember whether his father returned from the war or not. I have a vague feeling of there being an uncle, perhaps? I THINK that there's an uncle, who may also have been a GI, and the main boy (who I think was chubby and had glasses), (view spoiler)[ introduces the woman and other child as his family, but what comes out later is the truth that the child is the main character's half-sibling (hide spoiler)].

I think it takes place in Maryland, because I think they drive to visit the Memorial.
