mackenzm | 2 comments I read a book description in the kindle store last year, did not purchase it, and can't seem to find it in my viewing history there.
Story opens with a young girl eating some sort of animal to help improve her low iron/energy levels (or something similar), and she has specific enhancements of her senses that she does not know the origin of. She is in trouble, ends up escaping the orphanage, and on to a ship that is shortly about to leave the planet. She has a friend I believe she promises to come back for. This might be the first book of a larger series. Thank you for any help!

Perilous Waif by E. William Brown seems to match your description.

From the first two pages of Amazon's Look Inside preview: "My last day at the Benevolent Goddress orphanage started out full of promise... I smiled, and tore another bite out of zango I'd caught in my little pre-dawn hunting expedition... We had everything from spacer kids with zero-gee adaptations to full-on animal morphs... extreme morph types like me... watched the calcium deficiency warning slowly fade away."

Great! Glad you found your book, mackenzm. This was tricky. I got lucky with a search of Librarything.com:

Google search - site:www.librarything.com "young adult" "science fiction" escape orphanage
