Diane | 12845 comments Challenge Dates:
Jan. 1, 2018 through November 21 2022

Book Genre:
Any genre

Book Length:
Each book must be at least 100 pages in length.

Challenge Rules:
32 countries qualified for and will compete in the 2018 World Cup for soccer. In this challenge you will select and read one book set in each country or written by an author of each country. There will be a total of 31 "matches" in which your selected books will "compete" with other books.

The initial line-up will mirror the original line-up for the 2018 World Cup. Unlike the soccer World Cup, the books will be in a simplified single-elimination bracket. The winner of each match will be determined by you and which book you enjoyed most. In the unlikely event of a draw (you like both books equally), you will default to the Goodreads ratings and the book with the highest rating will win the match. The winner of each match will go on to play other winners according to the bracket. Losing books will be eliminated from further competition.

If you start late and have already read a book in 2018 that is set in or written by an author of one of the countries you may use it. If you have read multiple books for a country, choose either a new book or the book most recently read, so no countries will have an unfair advantage.

You will read a total of 32 books for this challenge. It is not necessary to choose a new book for each winning match for a given country. You may decide choose a new book if you wish (this is not required), but it may result in reading as many as 5 books for a given country. Again, one book per country will suffice.

Here is an example of a single elimination bracket:

 photo bracket.png

Here the original initial line-up for the 2018 World Cup. Books from matches do NOT need to be read in order. This will be your starting point.

Mome_Rath | 1319 comments Sounds fun! Like the other World Cup challenge, will everyone keep their brackets in this thread? Also, in your text above underneath the single elimination bracket, the line should be updated to say "Here is the original initial line-up for the 2018 World Cup." Thanks for setting this up!

Laurie | 619 comments Diane, you thought of this first challenge first. But here is an article with a suggestion for each World Cup country using a native author, just in case anyone needs a little help.

Mome_Rath | 1319 comments And so it begins!

We start our World Cup with the Russian totalitarian styling of We taking on the Saudi Arabian underdogs (quite literally) of Wolves of the Crescent Moon. The Saudi front line seems rather downtrodden, and not at all accepted by their wealthy patrons; the few upbeat moments have been followed by quick downturns in fortune. Meanwhile, the Russian team has been methodical and in lockstep, taking advantage of every minute in pursuit of their goal. But what is this? D-503 seems to have been swayed away from his position by fellow teammate I-330. No matter, the Russian team remains in control of this game (all praise the Benefactor).

We (Russia) defeats Wolves of the Crescent Moon (Saudi Arabia)

Mome_Rath | 1319 comments Day 2 of the World Cup brings us the Battle of Iberia, with Portugal's The Elephant's Journey taking on rival Spain's The Man of Feeling. Both have impressive pedigrees, and Portugal's particularly: if Saramago can lead a blind team to a championship, then surely he can get an elephant there. Indeed, it looks like the Spanish team is losing momentum in this match, stuck in a dreamlike state, Meanwhile the portuguese team is Capitalizing and scoring with witty and decisive moves, and punctuating its Superiority on its own terms, Goals are scored, and portugal easily secures its ticket to the second round.

The Elephant's Journey (Portugal) defeats The Man of Feeling (Spain)

Mome_Rath | 1319 comments On Day 3 of the World Cup the boisterous antics of France's The Three Musketeers face off against the chic but sensible play of Australia's mysterious Cocaine Blues. Forward Phryne Fisher of Australia seems to have quickly identified the chivalrous weakness of the French defense, making quite a statement with the first goal. But the musketeers rally forth, putting pride in king and country above any amorous asides, and with feints and fancy footwork, tie the game and get a go-ahead goal. The action was exciting for both teams, and the game seemed close, but France proves the victor, playing all for one, and one for all.

Nice list, Laurie! There are great choices, and I see some of the same books and authors made it into the competition here.

Mome_Rath | 1319 comments It's Day 4 of the World Cup, and fans are wondering how first-time World Cup qualifier Iceland, represented by Independent People, will do on the world stage. It has a formidable opponent in perennial contender Argentina, represented by The Seamstress and the Wind. As the match starts, Iceland's Bjartur of Summerhouses seems reserved, but puts up an effective defense against the random machinations of The Wind. The Wind counters by presenting Bjartur with a cow, which throws him off his game. But the Argentine team loses focus, giving up valuable momentum and the game as Bjartur manages to kick the ball off his land and into the opposing goal. And all on his own -- no co-op help for Bjartur, as Iceland advances in an upset! Who saw that coming?

Independent People (Iceland) defeats The Seamstress and the Wind (Argentina)

Mome_Rath | 1319 comments Day 5 of the World Cup starts Brazil's hope for redemption, with its vibrant and artful Daytripper taking on The Assistant of Switzerland. A bit of scandal erupted prior to the match when accusations surfaced that the Swiss manager has been living beyond his means and not properly compensating his team. As the match gets under way, it appears the Swiss might be unraveling, no matter how methodically they try to maintain control. Meanwhile, Brazil's Brás de Oliva Domingos is having the day of his life, scoring goal after goal after goal, to the pride of his family and his country. The game ends in a rout, with Brás hailed as a hero and carried off by his jubilant teammates when suddenly a speaker falls from the roof, crushing Brás and putting a tragic end to Brazil's day. But Brazil advances.

Daytripper (Brazil) defeats The Assistant (Switzerland)

Mome_Rath | 1319 comments Six days into the tournament, the strong but eclectic Germans and their teammates who make up The Journey to the East arrive in Russia to take on The Underdogs of Mexico. Don't let the Mexican moniker mislead -- these revolutionaries show grit and determination, and they take a quick lead against the German team, which appears to have lost its way. In fact, throughout this half, Germany's H.H. has repeatedly missed his teammate Leo who has been open in front of the net. Meanwhile, Mexico's band of others have fought with passion, and despite a noble Teutonic effort at the end, the Germans are once again defeated on Russian soil.

The Underdogs (Mexico) defeats The Journey to the East (Germany)
