What Are You Reading? - 2018
Give us a shout Travis when you get to Wizard and Glass and I will pick it up again! I need to finish that series. I have been watching the Castle Rock TV series which is set in the King's world. It started off really well and I loved all the connections to the books but the last few episodes it really tailed off. We actually stopped watching it. Rob isn't interested to continue but I might catch up on the last couple at some point.
I finished The Poppy War and I have very mixed feelimgs about it. Part of me thinks "brilliant piece of grim-dark fantasy" and the other part just thinks "YUCK"!!!Now, what will I read next......?
My grandson and I will be headed out on the highway in about an hour and we're going to listen to The Collapsing Empire. I've already read it, but the 2nd book in the series is out and I need a refresher before I read it. Plus it's short enough to complete on the road trip.
I'm kind of on fire here Sarah because I'm halfway through wizard and glass already. Kind of went nuts.If you want to pick it up I could probably keep it in my head though. The nice thing with this book is it's really just one event of Roland's back story so it kind of sets itself apart from the others.
The only one I haven't read out of the Dark Tower series is The Wind Through the Keyhole, which is right after Wizard and Glass. I pre-ordered it because I was so excited to read it, then never got around to it. I keep planning to do a reread of the series because it's been years since I read them, but haven't done it yet, at least not past book one. Sounds like you're having fun with your reread, Travis. You're flying through them. I have to say, Wizard and Glass was my least favorite of the series. I wonder if that will change when I finally get around to my reread. What do you think of it so far?
No worries Travis. I have a few books on the go at the moment and meed to finish my yearly challenge as a priority. And buddy reads. And work books. I'll get to it eventually.
Yeah. Since it was a reread I was just kind of going straight through the dark tower to take it I. As a single complete story this time. It's how I like to redo a series that's basically one story as many fantasy and sci fi are
I remember one left us in a cliffhanger on a train and that was before his injury so it took forever for the next book to come out. I was afraid he’d never finish the series and I thought you can’t leave us like this!! I’m glad he finally got around to it. I would have liked to have read them a lot closer together.
Yeah that was book 3. And the cliffhanger got me again lol. Luckily bith times I had book 4 but it comes to an end so quick on that cliffhanger it's like WTH
Exactly! And I read them as they were released. The next book wasn’t published for another 6 years! Six years just waiting in that train. I think I was traumatized. lol
For our RFP Breakfast Club Buddy read, I read Raymond Carver's short story Cathedral, which was curious indeed. It is the title story of a collection that was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. I included a link to where The London Magazine has published it online.

I finished Skyward which i enjoyed but it's definitely YA. Not as good as Sanderson's other work but interesting characters and concepts. I'll keep going with the series though. Now starting Odd Hours which is the final book of my yearly challenge.

I probably should have gone for that in the first place.
Just finished SALEM'S LOT which was a 5 stars for me, and I am starting no GRAY MOUNTAIN by John Grisham for the monthly challenge. First thing I will read by him, and I don't usually do well with best sellers authors, but I really want to know what is this about. My best friend in RL is a huge fan.
I finished The Husband's Secret which I found quite entertaining. People to like, people to dislike, people you want to slap. Who could ask for more? Next up is This Dark Road to Mercy which is for my zodiac challenge.
Sarah wrote: "I finished Skyward which i enjoyed but it's definitely YA. Not as good as Sanderson's other work but interesting characters and concepts. I'll keep going with the series though. Now..."You are the second person I have seen make that observation about Skyward Sarah. I will not rush out to buy it I think as YA is often not my genre.
Strange to say, after that comment, I am listening to Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow! I absolutely, completely love it! Yes, the tropes are old news but they work for me :-D
I have just started House of Glass. It sounds like it will be creepy and gothic which is exactly the sort of thing I am in the mood for right now.
Loved Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow. Engaging story, excellent narration. Recommend the audio version to anyone considering this book.I think I will start The Amulet of Samarkand next. Still have Educated active but stalled! I an not in the right mood for NF.
My grandson and I read The Collapsing Empire and The Dispatcher on our road trip. Both were rereads for me. I needed something long enough for a 12 hour road trip, and something short enough so we would finish it. Now, I'm ready for book 2 in the Interdependency series.
I'll resume The Violets of March now that I'm home.

I think I've mostly given away some old favourite books that are just physically too uncomfortable for me to read now. I'm glad I live in a time where I can adjust the 'reading material' to suit myself!
Wendell Berry shows us a lifetime in the moving short story Stand By Me. (Available free online)

Kristie, I'm still only halfway through Wizard and Glass. Not sure how I rated it the first time but I find myself wondering why this long of a single event of Roland's life was part of the series. Maybe it will be understood in the end but it does seem like to go off in so much detail on a side story it would have been better as a 3.5 book. One that was more of an option to read than just part of the series
I remember thinking something similar when I read it, Travis. I think that's partly why I didn't care for it. I wanted more of the "current" story and that one just didn't work for me.
Adam wrote: "Kill me if you can - James Patterson - Brilliant !! Chapters are short but the action is fast !!"I've not read much James Patterson, but I know he's famous for short chapters so you keep saying to yourself that you'll just read one more, then one more, then one more . . . : )
Evan Smoak is still answering his phone and asking the desperate callers "Do you need my help?" Well, duh! Of course, that's why were given the secret number of The Nowhere Man! This is #2 in Gregg Hurwitz's action-packed Orphan X series.
4★ My review
I finished The Violets of March. It didn't have much substance in my opinion. I'll start book 2 in the Interdependency series, The Consuming Fire today.
Finished Wizard and Glass but taking a break to reread 'Salem's Lot as its connected to the next book
I put The Amulet of Samarkand aside gor another day. It seems good but I'm just not connecting with it . Possible fantasy overload!!Starting Believe Me.
Uggh, every book I pick up for the monthly, I get 1/3-1/2 into only to discover it would fit a ZZ task I’ve been having difficulty with. To many books, too little time lol

The early teens sure can be tricky! Crush, by Svetlana Chmakova, is Awkward #3 in a big comic series for kids in middle school. Covers heaps of issues. My review, with many screen shots:

I finished This Dark Road to Mercy. It was a 3-star "meh".I'll start Blood Orchids tonight for my zodiac challenge.
I finished Believe Me last night. It was also a 3 star "meh" experience!I moved on to One Day which I have higher hopes of.
started The Wolf in Winter - - John Connolly - Charlie Parker is haunted by the past - and his future is unknown - i love this series - the dark and gripping read - starting right from the first page - Connolly does a great job pulling you into the story - just be warned you will have to check as you enter a dark room - just in case ..............
I'm starting The Five Wishes of Mr. Murray McBride today. I'm hoping to finish it in one day for the monthly challenge, though I have some other plans as well. I will be reading every spare minute and probably up pretty late, though it's good I have a midnight cutoff so I don't stay up too late, especially doing it all over again tomorrow for the toppler!
I finished A Little Life for a buddy read. It was definitely not a fun read, but it did make you think a lot about the way people can be impacted by their pasts. I also finished The Great Alone which I gave 4 stars. Now, the kiddos and I have started the Artemis Fowl series, and I'm off to find something to read for the monthly challenge. Decembers are a little crazy around here; so we'll see how much reading I manage to get done.
Edited to add: Okay, I seriously just went and looked to see what the monthly challenge is. Um, I guess I'm reading Artemis Fowl for that. Woot Woot! I love it when things work out like that.
Have you read other books by Kirsten Hannah, Tricia? I bought The Great Alone a few days ago after much doubt. I really liked one of her books, but gave another only 2 stars and one I abandoned..
Peggy wrote: "Have you read other books by Kirsten Hannah, Tricia? I bought The Great Alone a few days ago after much doubt. I bought it because it was on sale on Kindle. There were parts of this one that I didn't particularly care for, but over all, I liked it.
Which one did you like, and which didn't you? I'd be curious to hear your opinion before I try another.
I gave 4 stars to The Nightingale, 2 stars to Night Road, and abandoned Winter Garden. I had thought I would enjoy that last one, and don't often abandon books... That's also why I was hesistant to buy another one, but hey, it was cheap ;-)
Peggy wrote: "I gave 4 stars to The Nightingale, 2 stars to Night Road, and abandoned Winter Garden. The great Alone is also about the bond between a mother and daughter, but in this one, they get along from the beginning. Also, it doesn't skip around from the present to the past. Maybe you'll like it better.
I'm looking forward to The Great Alone. I loved The Nightingale. I also read On Mystic Lake and The Things We Do for Love years ago and recall liking them. I feel like since this is her newer writing, I just "know" I'm going to love it. (I sure hope I'm right!)
I also enjoyed THE NIGHTINGALE, but WINTER GARDEN wasn't good. I finished it because I read it for a toppler, but it wasn't what I was expecting after reading The Nightingale.
