It was during the Great Depression, so in the 1930's, but unfortunately it continued until 1950. Even then, the woman who gained millions from it basically got away with it, and was not brought to justice before she died. To make matters worse and to try to cover it up, the state of Tennessee sealed all the adoption records so that children could not find their real parents and parents could never find out what happened to their children. There were thousands of children that were involved and many more people whose lives were irreparably changed with that whole tragedy. The family in this book was fictionalized but based on what truly happened in real life to thousands of other kids. It is indeed horrifying.

You will LOVE it! I never expected the story to be what it was, and if it hadn't been for this challenge, I never would have picked it up. I am so grateful that I found it! I love that it just presents life as it is, and the characters have the right attitude (most of them) and it is just an awesome book, in my opinion.
