We meet Eleanor. She is a loner and works in an office. She figures her boss gave her the job because he felt sorry for her (black eye, missing teeth and broken arm) and didn’t expect her to want much out of the job. She had a routine and she lived by it. She made it through the weekend but drinking enough to not be drunk but not sober again, just trying to get through them. She went to the doctor to get prescription pain killers. She was out one Thursday and saw the love of her life. She knew this because of what he was wearing.

She had won tickets to a concert and had invited a guy from work. The people at work thought she was a freak but that was OK – she was use to it. The guy she was in love with was the singer in the band. She decided she was going to get a makeover from the outside in. She got to work on Friday and her computer wasn’t working. She called IT and when they didn’t respond in a couple of hours, she took an early lunch and went to get a bikini wax. Not what she was expected. They IT guy finally showed up after she got back from “lunch”. He found her doing a crossword. He said her computer had a virus and she needed to run a scan every week. On her way home from work, she bought a computer (something she had never done before) and ordered pizza delivered (she didn’t pick one up as normal) and started her search on the love of her life.

I wonder if this guy she is infatuated is a brother or something. She doesn't know her father and her mother is out there. She has a scar on her face from the temple to chin. Doesn't sound like she had a good childhood and her mother could sap the confidence from anyone.

Raymond, the IT guy from work waits to walk with her. She is trying to get away from him. A man collapses on the street. Raymond runs to him and tells her to call 999. She doesn't have a phone, he gives her his. Raymond rides with the guy to the hospital while Eleanor pretends to go to an appointment.

Eleanor was visited by a Social Working. They visited every six months. This is a new person that Eleanor does not know. The woman doesn’t really know what to do with her. Eleanor talks about visiting someone in the hospital and the woman mentioned that she spent a lot of time in the hospital and that visitors were nice. She reminds the woman that the only visitors she was allowed were the police and her legal representative. Her mother is known as “the pretty face of evil”. The Social worker dropped a sheet from her file. As it was about Eleanor, she didn’t say anything and would return it next time. Raymond called from the hospital with status on the stranger. His name was Sam Thom and he wasn’t doing well, he was still unconscious. There was no hurry to bring him his groceries. She made an inappropriate comment and he hung up. She read the dropped piece of paper – it was when she was 12 and staying with a foster family. They didn’t like her and wanted removed from their house. She was placed in residential care.

Eleanor toot he bus to the hospital to bring Samy his groceries. She determined to do the right thing stopped in the hospital gift shop to get him a gift. She didn’t know what to get as she didn’t really know him. As he was a fat male, she got him a playboy magazine. She found his room and found that he was not in coma but merely sleeping. Raymond came in and said that he woke up a couple of hours ago and had a concussion. They left together to let Samy get some rest. Raymond suggested they stop at a pub for a drink. She thought this may be a good idea so that she would be ready for it when the love of her life Johnny asks her out. They sit outside, which doesn’t please her as she doesn’t get to see inside the pub. She gets the drinks, asks him what kind of smart phone to get (as he is an IT guy) and then tell him he owes her for the drink as he is leaving.

Eleanor, with the help of google, found out where Johnny, her musician love lived. She found a picture he tweeted of his view, found the bar and when to see if she could find his house. She found the nameplate on the door. She called and he was home, she pretended to be a pizza delivery for a neighbor. She stopped at his door and listened to him compose a new song. She went home and failed at sleeping. Raymond called the next day to see if she wanted to visit Sammy. She doesn’t know why, but she said yes.

They went to see Sammy and he was happy and thankful to them for saving his life. Eleanor told him they just called for help, the paramedics are the ones that saved his life. Any way he was happy to meet them and asked that they visit later and meet his kids. After they left, Raymond told Eleanor that he was going to dinner at his mom’s house and asked her to come along. She didn’t know why, but she agreed.

Eleanor went with Raymond to see his mother. She has to use a walker due to severe arthritis. She was a nice late and made Eleanor feel welcome. She talked about Raymond, his sister and father and asked about her family (she had none). She told her that her mother was inaccessible but she talked to her once a week (which was too much). She found herself in tears as she talked about her mother. This made Raymond’s mother feel bad but she put her mind at ease. They ate soup and she helped Raymond with the chores. She said he had to leave a few hours later and was invited to visit anytime, with or without Raymond. She caught the bus home.

Eleanor bought a cellphone and went to work on Monday. She didn’t see Raymond Monday or Tuesday but on Wednesday, he called to ask her if she wanted to go see Sammy. It would mean missing her weekly call to her mother (which she had never missed) but she said yes anyway. She bought some healthy groceries and Raymond bought some snacks at the hospital gift shop. When they got there, his kids were all there. He has news that he was getting out on Saturday and his youngest daughter was having a party for him on Saturday. They were both invited. They accepted and left shortly after that.

The next day at work, Eleanor found a flyer for a deluxe manicure. She went for one at lunch time. It was expensive and she decided she could do the same thing for herself at home for no cost. Looking at her clothes, she decided she needed to get a new outfit for Saturday’s party. They her mom called, verbally abusing her for not calling the previous day and telling her how bad a person she is. The mother is certifiable and it is a good thing she is incarcerated.

Eleanor went to go to the concert but she found that it was sold out. She went back home and realized she didn’t have any Vodka to help her sleep. She slept anyway. She was up early the next morning and went to the local store. She was friends with the clerk and bought some stuff and asked for a couple of bottles of vodka. He wasn’t allowed to see vodka before 10 AM and look with distain at Eleanor for her trying to buy it. She went to the Tesco to get her vodka. Then in the store, she sees her musician. She doesn’t want to talk to him as she isn’t at her best but she does post to his twitter and he tweets back a nasty tweet.

Eleanor was to meet Raymond to go to Sammy’s welcome home party. She was irritated at Raymond because he showed up at 7:15 and the party started at 7:00. She thought it was rude that he was late. They visited and drank. She made an appointment with Laura the following week to have her hair cut. She talked to Raymond of past relationships. She told him of her relationship with Declan where he used to beat her up. Raymond was shocked speechless. She finally said she was going to leave. He called a taxi but said he was going to stay awhile. Laura was waiting for him to come back.

Eleanor took Tuesday afternoon to get her hair done at Laura’s salon. She gave Laura carte blank. She cut it shoulder length and gave it some color and Eleanor was happy with the results. Her comment to Laura – You’ve made me shiny. Thank you for making me shiny.

Eleanor thought to get a gift for Keith (1/2 bottle of vodka and some cheese). She met Raymond at the station and walked to the golf club. It was a nice night and Eleanor wanted to continue walking once they got there. Raymond was out of sorts but brightened up when Eleanor called him out on it. They bought each other drinks. Keith came by and asked her to dance. She didn’t know how but had a good time. She went to the rest room and when she came back, notice Raymond was gone but bought him a drink anyway. She had so much to tell him (about the dancing and lady in line at the bathroom). The music slowed and Eleanor found that Raymond was slow dancing with Laura on the dance floor. They looked happy, she decided it was time for her to leave. She drank his drink and went to catch the train.

Eleanor felt off on Sunday (discombobulated). She went to Bobbi Browns and got a make over again and then bought the stuff to do it herself. She did herself up before going to work on Monday. The girls at work were nice to her and gave her compliments. Raymond emailed her asking why she left the party without saying good bye. She just said she had enough. He asked her to lunch – she accepted. She told him she was going to take the job. He high fived her. She got a call from her mom that night (unexpected and unwanted). Her mom wanted to help her along with her project and to tell her she was a “pointless waste of human flesh”. (Nice mom).

Eleanor got another call from her mother with the normal harassment. She was working on finding a Christmas venue (this was not going to be a good thing) and people didn’t mind too much working with her. She had to work closer with Bob but it wasn’t too bad. The customer didn’t know what they wanted but knew what they didn’t want. She met with Raymond once a week for lunch (different days which bothered her but he didn’t like a set schedule). They always met at the same place and the people who worked there started to call her by name and ask if she wanted the normal. One week, Raymond wanted to meet shortly after the previous meeting which was out of the norm. She go there early and found out that Mikey would be leaving soon to spend more time with his dying wife and daughter. Raymond informed her that he had more bad news and that Sammy had died. They were going to the funeral on Friday.

Eleanor went shopping for funeral clothing. She bought a purse and shoes also. Raymond and Eleanor went to the funeral. After the funeral, there was a reception at the Hawthorn Hotel. Eleanor really didn’t want to go but Raymond said they had to at least for a little while. Quickly Eleanor found Keith and Gary to express her condolences but couldn’t find Laura. Then she found Laura, sitting on Raymond’s lap, they were embracing. She didn’t want to interrupt but could use a drink. She found the hotel bar and had a vodka & coke. She was the only one in the bar and the bartender kept filling her drink. Finally, she said she should get something to eat, he poured her one more and started to hit on her. Raymond came in, put a 20 pound note down and took Eleanor back to the party to get her some tea and food. She took a brief nap and then they left. He took her to his place, offered her coffee and she asked for vodka or something else. He asked if she want to watch a film. She said OK. She asked him why he wasn’t with Laura, saying she had seen them at the party and the receptions. She was with her family which is where she should be. They watched a film. Then he asked her what happened to her face (stipulating she didn’t have to answer). She told him about the fire when she was 10, it was arson and she had been in Social Service care ever since. She didn’t want to talk about her mom, which he respected. She went home in a taxi.

Eleanor found that Johnny was have a farewell gig. She secured tickets and then wanted to check out the venue. She bought tickets to a concert on Monday and asked Raymond if he would go with her. She told him the band and he was surprised she liked them. They went to the concert, it dark and dirty and Raymond showed up in a sweatshirt with a skull. She didn’t think it was appropriate until she saw that everyone was in black, including makeup. She didn’t make it through the first song before she ran out. Raymond couldn’t stop laughing, he knew she wouldn’t like that music. She told him about seeing Pilgrim Pioneers and asked him what he thought of the music. He wasn’t impressed and she didn’t know much about music so couldn’t say much. She wanted him to tell her all he know about music,
It was the day of the concert, she was ready, she could hardly wait. Tonight, she would meet the man whose love would change her life. She was ready to be reborn. (This is not going to go well)

Mon 22-Jan Ch 26
She woke up naked and under a table. It was the table in her house on which was several methods of killing yourself (pills, drano, knives …). She has passed out and there were vodka bottles and vomit all over. She was trying to figure out how to kill herself. No one would notice. How could she have ever expected the singer to save her from loneliness, he didn’t know how, how could she expect that. The way he treated people, she realized he was an arse. She went to the bar, and then she saw smoke and though there was a file. She doesn’t know how she got home. All she knew now was she was out of vodka. She went to the shop and bought 3 new bottles and saw that it was Friday. She went home, put on a nightgown, got into bed with a vodka bottle on the night stand. She awoke to pounding and realized it was real and on her door. She opened the door and heard “Jesus Chris”, she said no “Eleanor Oliphant”.

Tue 23-Jan Ch 27 – 28
The next time she woke up she was on the couch covered in towels. She saw what she thought was a glass of vodka on the table next to her and realized as she was drinking it, it was water. There was someone in her house. Raymond came out and asked if she was hungry. She had some soup and he put her to bed. When she woke up. She took a shower, and found some flowers and a note from Raymond to call him when she woke up and a phone number. She also noticed the house had been cleaned. She ate what was in the fridge and called to tell Raymond that she was OK. He wasn’t taking that and said he would be over in a hour. He told her she needed to talk to someone and if she didn’t want to talk to him, she would call a counselor, therapist, family member or a friend. She didn’t have any of those, when he suggested her mother, she said no, her mummy would probably be delighted. He couldn’t believe that, she told him he hadn’t met her mummy.
Raymond took to showing up unannounced periodically. She was use to people leaving and sending her back into the system when she got difficult. No one ever stuck it out. She wondered if that was what it was like in a normal family. Per Raymond’s request, she made an appointment with a GP. He wanted her to tell the GP everything she has been going through and made her promise. The appointment was for the next day.

Eleanor went to her appointment with the counselor. She didn’t want to tell her too much and tried to talk around what was going on. The root of her problems came out, her mother. The therapist (Maria) jumped on it. She had Eleanor pretend her mother was an empty chair and that she could say anything to her. She finally let out – Please don’t hurt us.
