Announcements [Mods Only]
Jan 1: Happy New Year!! A new year means a new challenge which may just be the most exciting part of the start of 2018.
If you haven't already, create a 2018 plan to get organized for the new prompts.
If you've been here before, you'll notice that we changed the format up for the progress posts and they are now weekly topics. They are an open discussion about each week. But please continue to keep discussion of the actual book in the proper A-Z Folder.
What are the A-Z Folders, you may ask? The A-Z folders are here to discuss the books, so to make the topics friendly, please follow the rules:
- Make sure that there isn't already a discussion going for your book before creating a new thread! If there is one, join it.
- For the title, use "Title, by Author".
- Link the book to the topic, using the "This topic is about" box.
- To encourage discussion: tell us for which "category number" you'll read the book and why you chose it, don't forget to give your opinion when you finish the book. A summary of the book would be nice [copy and paste from the book page ;) ] but is not required.
- You can post new topics for your next 3 reads and join the existing discussions for all your planned books.
Suggestions are now open for our February Book of the Month. The theme has changed slightly so hopefully this allows more members to fit the book into their 2018 plan.
Please join me, and the other mods, in welcoming Bryony to our mod team!! Look out for an intro from all the mods coming soon.
We added a new (minor) feature to the group with a "water cooler"- type break area. Go there to have completely open discussion about your day and general life.
We will be having another read-a-thon, with team challenges, in the next few weeks. Stay tuned!
Just a friendly reminder, this section is for mod use only. Subscribe to new announcements by checking the 'Notify me when people reply' box. If you have questions, ask them here!

A copy of the May Newsletter, by request
Welcome to the brand new Around the Year in 52 Books newsletter. We’ll be sending this out at the start of each month to keep you all up to date with group activities like Book of the Month, read-a-thons and planning our reading list for 2020.
If you joined the group but haven’t yet started the challenge then check out the complete 2019 reading list and instructions for participating here.
==========================
Book of the Month
Suggestions are nowopen[closed] for our June book of the month. The theme is a book with a number in the title or on the cover. Please visit this thread to suggest a book. There’s also still time to catch up on the discussion about April’s Book of the Month, Circe by Madeline Miller.
==========================
Read-a-thons
The remaining read-a-thons for 2019 will be in June, September and December. Look out for more details nearer the time.
In the meantime, we’ll be running a “24B4Monday” weekend from Friday 10 May to Sunday 12 May. A bit like a read-a-thon, the idea is to read for 24 hours (or a smaller target if you prefer) over the weekend. Add the date to your calendar and look out for more information soon.
==========================
Popular discussions
Struggling to pick your next book? Post your shortlist and see what other readers recommend in ”What should I read next?”
Do you enjoy reading long books? Check out the 500+ club for recommendations and encouragement from other fans of doorstoppers.
Don’t forget to take a look at the Fun & Games folder for book-related games and chat.
==========================
Group highlights
The group group bookshelves are a great place to get ideas and inspiration for prompts you haven’t yet completed.
Our group reading map records all the countries that members of the group have “visited” by reading a book set there. To add your books to the list just post the title and location in this thread.
There’s some friendly competition amongst people using the community spreadsheet! If you’ve added your name to the spreadsheet then don’t forget to update your progress regularly.
==========================
2020 reading challenge
The Around the Year in 52 Books reading list for each year is created by group members who suggest topics and vote to determine which ones make the final list. We’ll start planning the 2020 list in June 2019 but if you have any thoughts before then feel free to join the 2020 Wild Discussion
That’s all for now. As always, if you have any questions then don’t hesitate to ask here and one of the mods will be happy to help.
Happy reading!

Once you get past that beautiful cover, the book's first sentence is an opportunity to really set the stage for the rest of the story. Don't forget to share your current read's first sentence here.
Also a friendly reminder to update your personal tracking list in the community spreadsheet. Not only is it exciting to see your own percentages rise, but we can also see the progress for the whole group. There's even the added bonus of competing with your "neighbors". Community Guidelines
This is a friendly reminder of the following Goodreads community guidelines. We are highlighting the following:
- Not everyone shares the same point of view, and that diversity of opinion is what makes Goodreads a great place to share your ideas. Respectful, lively debates are encouraged, but consider the impact of your contributions on individuals and the community as a whole before jumping in.
- Hate speech, bigotry, threats, and ad hominem attacks are not tolerated. Criticizing the opinions of others is permitted, but attacking individuals for their opinions is not.
We have an amazing sense of community and a friendly atmosphere in the ATY group. the mods. I’m sure we all want to continue this! Any repeated violations of these community guidelines will unfortunately result in removal from the group.

==========================
That's it for today, the Mod team is wishing you a great month and hope you'll appreciate all the fun stuff coming up in the group! Don't hesitate to ask questions or make any suggestions here.
Happy reading!
