4. South Sudan: Beneath the Darkening Sky by Majok Tulba Beneath the Darkening Sky by Majok Tulba.

Novel about two brothers who are kidnapped and forced to become child soldiers after SAF soldiers attack their village. The boys, originally close, go morally into two different directions. The book is extremely violent, but I am sure that it reflects the reality of atrocities that child soldiers have to endure. Definitely not an easy read.

I took advantage of Ethiopia's hub status this week and took a side excursion to Liberia with Mighty Be Our Powers How Sisterhood, Prayer, and Sex Changed a Nation at War by Leymah Gbowee Mighty Be Our Powers: How Sisterhood, Prayer, and Sex Changed a Nation at War by Leymah Gbowee.

This is an inspiring memoir by Gbowee, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, for her efforts toward achieving peace in Liberia. She organized peaceful demonstrations by thousands of Liberia's women, helping to overthrow Charles Taylor.

I took one more hub to hub side excursion to Gabon with Mema by Daniel M. Mengara Mema by Daniel M. Mengara.

I have wanted to read this book for a long time and am glad that I finally did. It is the story told by a boy about his strong-willed and outspoken mother. It is told during a time of encroaching colonialism, where the influence of the white settlers is just starting to make changes within an indigenous tribal village deep in the jungles of Gabon. Both mother and son endure hardships due to both misfortune and decisions made in the medzo, or village court. I loved reading about the traditions, customs, and superstitions present in village life. The love between the mother and her son is obvious.

Ah, that would do it. I was "snow dayed" in for only two days and with a 9 year old, so I didn't get to read as consistently. Plus the university kept giving mixed signals about closing for the days, and it was first week of school, so I was having to email grad students and post syllabi and such.

Where do you live? Our pseudo snow days were in Houston...

I live in metro-Atlanta. We have had a ridiculous amount of inclement weather days this year. One day last month I actually measured a consistent 12" of snowfall in my yard. I have never seen so much snow here. I moved down south to escape all of that, but it apparently followed me.

No. I used to use Photobucket but it has become a real pain with all of the ads. I found an easier way to add the pictures by copying and pasting using html.
