I loved this book too. I was a little tentative going into it when Scott told me it was basically a whole new cast of characters. I shouldn't have worried as SE weaves his magic once again.

The prologue in a series full of great ones is the best.

Choko (chokog) | 5103 comments Spot!

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 3340 comments OMG, I really need to get back and finish HoC.

A whole new set of characters? I'm going to need a brand new notebook, I see.

Get ready. There is more quotable material in this book than any other and it might be 2X.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 3340 comments Well the book is huge. It looks significantly thicker than the first three books, my copy at least does.

Veronica wrote: "Well the book is huge. It looks significantly thicker than the first three books, my copy at least does."

Word count per book it's actually the second shortest and all the ones to come are monsters compared to it.

1 Gardens of the Moon 209,000
2 Deadhouse Gates 272,000
3 Memories of Ice 358,000
4 House of Chains 306,000
5 Midnight Tides 270,000
6 The Bonehunters 365,000
7 Reaper's Gale 386,000
8 Toll the Hounds 392,000
9 Dust of Dreams 382,000
10 The Crippled God 385,000

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 3340 comments I wonder why my paperback copy looks so much thicker then. Hmmmm....

It'll be interesting to see how many notebooks I can fill up before I'm done. Probably not as many as I think. I'm just coming to the end of the first one but we're into the fourth book already.

I think you'll be surprised.

I've been looking forward to this reread the most. This book is pretty confusing at the start. We are getting dumped into an entirely new world. I cannot wait for the things I missed the first time.

Graeme Rodaughan | 2041 comments Those word counts are enormous, so approx 3M words across the whole series.

Amazing.

Especially when many of are bigger than one trilogy from authors such as Michael J Sullivan or Mark Lawrence and many others.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 3340 comments I was wrong. I had the books in the wrong order so it's actually Reaper's Gale that's the monster size.

Graeme Rodaughan | 2041 comments I'm really looking forward to this book. This series is my favorite at the moment.

Thank you. I really do get a kick out of everybody loving this series. There is frankly nothing else so epic. I'm in Angela and Miche's threads constantly living vicariously through them as well as they see these things for the first time. So it's a labor of love both of the books and all of your enjoyment.

Bea | 2052 comments I loved Midnight Tides, it's one of my favorite books from this series :)
Once you get over the fact it's a new setting and new characters again (which I didn't find that hard in this one), it's really amazing. And it has quite a few amazing new characters! So have fun reading this!

@Scott: I've only been quietly stalking the Malazan threads but I agree, it's great to see people get excited over the series :)

Yes but that was a much smaller group to start. They could probably tell you but I think only 3 or 4 started.

When I went through the first time there were 3 of us that started. Jenna and I made it all the way through. We also picked up a few people along the way who started out ahead of us and joined for anywhere between the last 4-6 books including the Empire ones in the recommended reading list. Some continued for Kharkanas and Path to Ascendency.

I had started Malazan with another group. We were then going trough one book per month but that schedule wasn't working for me. I then saw that Angela and Samir were reading the series here and taking breaks between books, so I caught up to them at book 4 and joined the read at book 5. Samir had to drop, so Angela and I continued it slow and steady.

I can't believe we will be reading The Crippled God this month! :D

Yes, if I recall correctly now TS, Choko and Robin were part of that group. I was adding notes during that read but it was tough because it's really hard to recall the sequence of everything in this series because there's thousands of events.

You have no shot. I have no doubt you can roll straight into this one to DHG but that book utterly destroys you or you don't have a soul. That's not even taking into account the words counts that I posted above.

1 Gardens of the Moon 209,000

3 Memories of Ice 358,000
4 House of Chains 306,000

I suspect you said this tongue in cheek anyway but just in case. I hope you're really enjoying GotM. I have chapter notes for all the books in the associated threads if you need clarity on anything.

Deadhouse Gates or MoI better destroy me, I want this series to crush my soul/be my favorite series of all time otherwise I'll call it a disappointment. It's not about having no soul for not feeling sad, but let's just say my expectation towards this series is unreasonably high and I'll keep it that way because of the bunch of fanatics of the series have hurt many readers I know with their words.

Examples:
-"you are an idiot, you don't understand this series."
-A: "I've read 5 books, it's okay"
B: "No, you need to read until the tenth book to understand its greatness."
-"Malazan ruined my expectation for epic fantasy. Anyone who love Sanderson books but doesnt like Malazan are just literal idiots who dont understand epic fantasy."

Yeah... how about maybe understanding the fact that everyone has different taste?? Sorry for ranting a bit here hahaha but these things have been shoved to my face more than 300 times throughout the past 2 years

And I didn't realize MoI is that big! I'm always more of a binge reader anyway. Everyone told me that each book require at least a week to finish and I'm almost done with GotM (this is my fourth day, I have 20% left, will finish it in 2 hours). However, seeing that word counts, seems like I'll be on House of Chains during the date, I'll see if I can join late. I'm enjoying it, living up to the praise on the scope and many more aspect; despite my hatred on the fanatics and assholes of the series
