It should, but I believe if someone deletes what is in the sort by title field, the field stays empty.

I think you are correct. Editing the title field and the sort by will auto edit. But deleting ...

#6 Both "sort by title" fields are correct.Only way I can explain it is when what seems a regular "Tea" on the Russian book are actually Russian characters.
Foreign characters sort after the Roman A-Z.
That first book Walking Shadows comes before all else when sorted by title
