I just finished Volume 1 last night. I am not sure how the introduction will fit in with the story yet. In fact as of now, I am not sure how it is post apocalyptic science fiction.
As of now, the main character impressions I got from Volume 1.
Lionel Verney- seen as uncivilized and student of Adrian
Perdita- seems to be the only character that changes (maybe grows up is the better term to use).
Idris- not much yet, used more as a "idol" for Lionel, as of Volume 1 she didn't' seem to add much to the story
Adrian- idealistic scholar
Raymond- self centered and manipulative

Interesting that the book was rejected because she was a woman.
