so, there are these kids who watch their adult relative get kidnapped, and then they find a button or something and they are led to a shoe polish shop and under it theres a hidden access to a train station? meanwhile theres another kid who's in a lab? experiments? and theyre in the north pole?

No Golden Compass takes place in an different universe and is where children are being kidnapped. A young girl obtains a special compass that allows her to see truth and she sets out to save the kids. I don't know if I can say much more without going into spoilers.
