Starts: 01/01/2018
Ends: 12/31/2018

Continuing the tradition started by Mpauli, I present the Defenders vs. West Coast Avengers challenge.

Players are welcome to join in whenever they want during the year, as long as the event is running.

Note: I am, first and foremost, a comic book fan. If there’s a difference between the comic book version of a character and the cartoon/tv/movie version, I’ll pretty much always use the original, comic book one (there are very few exceptions to characters being in the comics first. Oddly, most of them are female).

Rules:

-Each player decides, if he or she wants to compete for the Defenders or the West Coast Avengers team.

-Defenders players are trying to complete the Defenders roster challenge, West Coast Avengers players trying to complete the West Coast Avengers roster challenge.

-There are going to be 12 characters on each roster, each represented by 3 challenges based on that characters traits and powers. A bio for each character will be posted the first time that character is completed.

-For each trait challenge you're able to complete, your team is awarded 1 point.

-If you manage to complete all three trait challenges you "recruit" that character completely, which is awarded with 3 additional points.

-With 12 characters and 3 trait challenges per character, you need to read 36 books for the maximum of 72 points from the recruitment part of the challenge.

-The books for the recruitment challenge can be read at any point during 2018.

-Each book can only count toward one trait challenge, so you can't complete multiple challenges by just reading one book, even if the book would technically qualify for more then one challenge.

-For a book to count, it should have at least 100 pages. Graphic Novels do not count for the challenge.

-In addition to the recruitment part, each month a supervillain will be revealed. Like the heroes, each villain will have 3 trait challenges. For each completed challenge you're rewarded with 1 point, if you manage to "beat" the villain by completing all 3 related challenges, you're awarded with an additional 3 points.

-Villains will only be active for one month each and you can't score from their challenges afterwards. But of course you can complete them for fun.

-Villains should be revealed at least 2-3 days before the end of the month, so you get a little bit of time ahead to think about potential books to beat them.

-IMPORTANT: The books required for the villain challenges have to be read completely within the timeframe the villain is active. A book started 2 days prior the villain goes active can't be counted for the challenge.

-Beating each villain within the given amount of time would result in an additional maximum of 72 points you're able to earn for your team.

-IMPORTANT: To be able to keep up the score, it would great, if you could use a new post for each new book read, maybe like this: book link/character name/challenge name/number of challenges completed for that character
Example: Dune/Captain America/Shield Toss/2 of 3
Of course you can additionally use a huge post, where you can schedule your books for all the challenges.
And it would be extremely helpful, if you would write "x recruited" within the post you completed the final trait challenge for a hero, or "x defeated" respectively for beating a villain.

- Portal Heroes:
Dr. Strange and Scarlet Witch are trying to recruit help for their teams and are trying to open portals to other comic universes to recruit heroes from there.
That means that we will have 6 additional heroes this year. But to be able to score from them, they need to be brought through the portal by the teams.
How does that work? Every time a player reads one of the Dragons & Jetpacks Books of the Month, this book counts towards an "Energy Cell" counter for his team. After the counter (30 for the first portal) is filled the team can unlock 1 of the 6 outer-dimensional heroes. After the decision is made, the hero belongs either to the Defenders or West Coast Avengers team and can't be unlocked by the other side. When the second team opens a portal, they choose from the remaining 5 heroes.

-For the portal heroes, only books count that are read after the time the hero was unlocked, so if a hero is unlocked in April, you can't use books read prior to that date.
Also, players who join a team during the year can only make books count for those outer-dimensional heroes after they've joined the challenge. This restriction only counts for these heroes, the normal roster can be recruited retrospectively by new players. If a player wishes to, they can substitute a Mod Special for a BOTM, but it's a substitution, not in addition to.

-After we see how fast the teams manage to open the first portal, the amount of Energy Cells needed to open the second portal might be adjusted to a lower or higher number.

-It is up to the players to decide when they read a BOTM, if they want to have it count towards a normal challenge or as an energy cell. Please include that information in your posts

-So, that's how you can play. I hope you're going to enjoy this challenge. :)

The Defenders

The Defenders were a very unusual team. While most big teams had headquarters, membership cards, sometimes even rules and government clearances, this team had none of that. They'd meet, if you could say they did that, at the homes of various members, most often Dr. Strange's Sanctum. The membership was very fluid, with many of the New York based Marvel characters wandering on to the team for an adventure or two. The core membership, such as it was, was the Big Four (Hulk, Dr. Strange, Silver Surfer, Namor) and the Little Three (Nighthawk, Hellcat, Valkyrie), but these members didn't go on every mission. Heroes came and went at random. Many drifted back and forth from the Avengers. In later incarnations, the team changed to a more formal set up, and later, other versions. The West Coast Avengers

The Avengers decided that they could better protect the world if they weren't based solely in New York. With that in mind, they told Hawkeye, one of their accomplished leaders, to go out to California and found an expanded team (the Titans did this with Titans West roughly 15 years earlier). Hawkeye and his new bride, Mockingbird, started the team in their mansion/compound, which looked a bit like Howard Stark's place in season two of Agent Carter. They recruited a core membership, and others came and went over time. Notably, this was very early in Rhodey's time as Iron Man, so he met many of these heroes for the first time, although most of them thought it was still Tony Stark in the armor. Finally, several years later, the team was disbanded and re-absorbed into the main unit. No other teams have gone bicoastal like this since, although the Justice League did have Justice League Europe for a time in the 90's.

Portal Heroes

Zorro (Gold Key, Dynamite) CLAIMED BY THE WEST COAST AVENGERS

Zorro is the swashbuckling hero of Spanish California, fighting the Alcalde's tyrannical ways, striking back for the people. He first appeared in a book, The Curse of Capistrano, and went on to appear in movies, tv shows, comic books, and cartoons. When you look at his background, you can see the influence he had on a later character: Don Diego de la Vega poses as a useless fop while heroically fighting corruption and crime. Based from a cave below his familial mansion, he dressed in dark clothes with a flowing black cape, aided by a faithful manservant, has a very recognizable symbol, and took his name from an animal inspiration. Sound familiar?

Space Ghost (DC, Marvel, Comico, Gold Key) CLAIMED BY THE WEST COAST AVENGERS

description

Space Ghost first appeared a cartoon hero in 1966, He was one of many created Hanna Barbera, an intergalactic hero fighting for justice with two teen sidekicks and a monkey. The show ran a few seasons and was cancelled. The character came back in a bizarre new version, as a talk show host, becoming much more comic relief. He's also been in several comic book titles, including DC Comics recent Future Quest line. Space Ghost, among his powers, can fly, turn invisible, has some measure of super human strength, and can fire various types of energy blasts from his power bands.

1. Inviso-Power!- read a book where a character, ship, or item can tun invisible and/or uses a cloaking device, or a book with a character that’s really good at stealth/sneaking.
2. Jan and Jayce- read a book with two teens on the cover or where a character has younger companions on their adventures.
3. Laser blast- read a book with energy weapons on the cover or where characters use some kind of energy weapon/blaster in the story.

Hardcase (Ultraverse)

description

Hardcase was one of the first "Ultras" as superhumans are called in that world. Struggling actor Tom Hawk was affected by the "Jumpstart Effect" that created most of that world's supers. The hero life grew on him and he joined with a few others to form the Squad. Their short lived team ended when the robotic NM-E killed two and left Hawk's girlfriend, Starburst, in a coma. He retired, but came back when supervillains started showing up along with a new wave of heroes. He later joined that world's premier team, Ultraforce. Hardcase has immense strength and resistance to energy, some enhanced senses, and a healing ability if something manages to actually harm him. In his own book, he teamed with the enigmatic Choice, an Ultra with an impressive array of powers. He was in his own comic for over two years, Ultraforce, a short-lived cartoon version of the team, and had his own action figure. Sadly, Ultraverse was purchased by Marvel and essentially smothered. The characters haven't been seen in decades.

1. The Squad- read a book where a character is the sole survivor of something or where a character sees friends/loved ones killed before their eyes.
2. Tom Hawke- read a book where the main character is an actor or with some kind of movie/play/performance in the story, or an actor on the cover.
3. Choice- read a book with a woman with mysterious powers on the cover, or where a character has a lover with an enigmatic past.

Popinjay (Wild Cards Marvel/Epic) CLAIMED BY THE DEFENDERS
description

Wild Cards was a series of novels edited by George RR Martin (yes, THAT one). In that world, everything changes after 1947 or so, when the Wild Card virus is unleashed on Earth, creating monsters (jokers), people with small powers (deuces) and a few comic book style superhumans (aces). Jay is a private investigator who has managed to be part of several major events in the Wild Card universe. Most of the powers in that world have odd limits; Jay is a "projecting teleport." If he makes his hand into a gun, he can send who/whatever he's pointing at to anyplace he's memorized. He can't teleport himself, but he has a surprising lack of range limitation. He abhors guns and won't use or carry one. The Wild Cards heroes, including Jay, were part of a short run comic series of the same name from Marvel/Epic. He's known for his power, and his catchphrase, "Might as well, can't dance" which is usually offered with a sarcastic shrug when he's presented with bad options.

1. Jay Ackroyd- read a book with a private investigator as the main character, or with a PI on the cover.
2. Now You See It...- read a book with teleportation in the story or where something inexplicably disappears.
3. “Might As Well, Can’t Dance”- read a book with a character that has a catchphrase, or where a saying is repeated many times in the story, or has a slogan from the story (not advertising the book) on the cover

Indiana Jones (Marvel, Dark Horse) CLAIMED BY THE DEFENDERS

description

Somehow, I expect at least most of you know this one...

According to legend, Indiana Jones was created when two great minds, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, were batting ideas around on a beach. Both loved the classic pulp movies of their youth, and thought about a new character from that era. Originally supposed to be Tom Selleck, who couldn't get out of his Magnum PI contract, the role went to Harrison Ford, and the rest is history. The archeologist with a penchant for bullwhips, punching Nazis, and mystical adventures, has been in blockbuster films, a tv show, several comic series, and a collection of paperback novels. If adventure has a name, it must be... Indiana Jones (or Dr. Henry Walton Jones, Jr if you're going by the birth certificate).

1. Crack that whip- read a book where a whip is used in the story or has a whip on the cover.
2. “You Call Him Dr. Jones!”- read a book with a non-medical doctor as a character or with an archeologist in the cover.
3. “Why Did It Have to be Snakes?”- read a book where a character has a phobia or with snakes on the cover or in the title.

Doctor Who (Titan) CLAIMED BY DEFENDERS
description

Dr. Who first aired in 1963. Actually, the first episode had to be rebroadcast, because it had the misfortune to premier the night President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. It has become the longest running science fiction show in history, even allowing for the years it was off the air. With the main character regenerating every so often, it's also about the only show where the entire cast, from title role on down, is routinely replaced. The Doctor, real name unknown, is from Gallifrey, a very advanced planet. He stole an old transport ship, a TARDIS, and started having adventures, fighting all manner of evil with an array of companions. The Doctor has a particular soft spot for humans. He's far from a typical action hero: carrying no weapons, his ship is unarmed, and he is, usually, a great moral force for good. Aside from the tv show, the Doctor has been in a few movies, many books, spun off several shows about his companions, and has an amazing array of audio plays. He's one of the most beloved characters in science fiction. The only constant has been the TARDIS and its strange noise when it appears. Some call it the sound of hope.

1. TARDIS- read a book with a time machine in the story or a phone booth/box on the cover.
2. Regeneration- read a book where a character comes back from the dead, where their personality completely changes, or with a glowing character on the cover.
3. Galifrey- read a book with a character from a planet more advanced than the one he’s/she’s on for most of the story, or with a planet on the cover.

Any suggestions for the January villain? I think I'm stumped. Would Words of Radiance match any of them?

I can't think of anything that would apply from that

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 803 comments Audrey wrote: "Any suggestions for the January villain? I think I'm stumped. Would Words of Radiance match any of them?"

I can't think of any that would fit for the January villain, but it would fit the "main character has mental issues" requirement for Hank Pym.

Well, the Defenders are looking a mite outnumbered, with a bit over 24 hours left until start time.

Then again, they have Joy, who, to judge from last year, might even the odds all on her own.

I haven't decided for sure about bonus heroes and such this year, but I might to something for it. I'm open to suggestions/requests/preferences. Like the band says, "I take requests. I don't play them, but I take them..."

Sandy wrote: "We are 11 to 8 - do you need me to change before we start to make the teams more even?"

Thanks, but i don't think so. It's close enough, and there's no telling who else might join as we go. I think we're good to start.

message 48: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 1665 comments Glad you said that as I have already started putting possible books out there ;-)

message 49: by Shawnie (new)

Shawnie | 1899 comments We usually have a few late starters to help even out the teams. :)

I have all my pretties lined up for the new year! Can't wait for a fresh reading year.

message 50: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 1273 comments I liked the informative blurbs. I know they are a lot of work, but I'm not very knowledgeable regarding comic books.

I also liked the base bonus challenge the best because of its uniqueness.
